going to uni in octber what do i need

Options
Hi,
my son is going to uni. in October and I am wondering what will i need to get him. I'm aware that he needs pots and pans etc., he's self catering, but what stuff have people found that they needed and didn't take. Stuff that can save him hassle or money if he takes them with him. Someone has suggested passport photos which we can print ourselves before he goes. That sort of stuff.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thnks
Happi

Extension Leads are a must imo as there were only two sockets in each of the flats I lived in, a few home comforts, passports photos are a good idea if he's going to be wanting gym memberships etc.

  • Hi.
This thread from a few days ago should answer all your questions:

In particular, look for my posts where I have posted links to external websites that have a moving out lists for students.

Work through the list and work put what is easier to buy in advance and what he can buy when he gets there.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!
  • don't buy too many pans, plate etc. if he's shareing everyone else will have brought plates. buy tea towles because they get lost, a toasted sandwich maker is always good. Tupperware is a necessity. Buy pegs if theres a washing line. Alot of paper, note books and high lighters, you can usually get alot of pens at freshers fairs.
Everyone takes alot more than they need in their first year.

  • I was in the same situation when i went to uni...didn't know what i'd take...as i was planning to stay in halls in my first year...

However i just took the essentials and see how things went....ended doing ok....as i decided i didn't want to stay in halls...and rented a fully furnished flat...lol

There isn't a really a must have list...only what each individual has to have...tbh

A doorstop! Most of the doors into bedrooms in halls are fire doors so they swing shut and it can feel a bit claustrophobic and lonely at first! It's nice to hear everyone else and be able to know what's happening if you want to!

A wok! And if you can get one, a George Foreman.
  • Coat hangers! That is what I forgot. and an airing rack - but he could get cheaply I guess.
Stuff like pepper and salt and other basics boys might not consider buying but are handy.

Think the previous post said it really - a clothes dryer (airer) for wet washing - saves money on tumble drying. Was a must for each of my 3 uni offspring
