i have a wireless Linksys router. It is for a laptop my daughter uses upstairs. we pulled the plugs out upstairs and now the Main pc downstairs is not working.
when i go into wireless connections at the botton right the screen that comes up says local area connection with a red X on it but usually beside that it says wireless connection and says connected.i assume the main pc runs off the wireless also. I only want to ring virginmedia as a last resort as it is 25 Per minute and usally on at least 30 min with them
can anyone help me to get the main pc up and running again.

Just sounds to me like it's lost the wireless connection and isn't reconnecting. If you goto control panel->network connections, is the wireless connection there?
If so if you double click it you will be able to manage the reconnection and also, click on properties and then at the bottom of the box that appears tick the 2 boxes so the wireless icon will always show in your taskbar.
If it isn't there in network connections post back and im sure myself or somoene will be able to help further.
P.S. are you sure your main PC uses wireless? its not very common and you should certainly know if it does because you will usually have had to buy an adapter for it. There are also some motherboard that come with onboard now but again rare and I think you would know about it.0 -
in network connections now.no its not there. only the one that says local area connections.but the wireless is working the laptop i am on now????? just not the main pc
maybe the wireless one is for the laptop. should i click on the one that says local area connection it has a big red X on it tho

I think it's right, either the network cable is unplugged (either at your PC or the router) or it has become faulty. Have a look round the back of your PC and look for something like this (its like a fat phone point):
(thats the back of a laptop but same applies)
firstly make sure it is plugged in there and then follow the wire to the router and make sure it is plugged in there. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in and restarting the PC.
Post back if no luck0 -
Hmm, ive just looked through your previous posts and found the thread about moving the computer to a different room, that thread suggests that you bought a USB wireless adapter, did you go ahead with that?
If so then it does indeed sound like your desktop uses wireless, what brand is the adapter and does it use its own software or have you used windows Zero Config to connect to the wireless previously?0 -
i have unplugged the plug you told me. It goes from the ntl silver broadband box to the wireless router.no luck its still not showing in the Network connections box.that small lead does go from the router into the broadband box dosnt it ?0

Are there any other wires which come out of the back of the wireless linksys router (apart from the power), if so then follow it and does it go into the back of your PC?
If so you will have a setup like this:
If you don't have any more wires then my previous question still applies:Hmm, ive just looked through your previous posts and found the thread about moving the computer to a different room, that thread suggests that you bought a USB wireless adapter, did you go ahead with that?

no didnt move it. still in the same room.small black lead from the linksey goin to the to the electric socket and the other grey cable goes from linksys to silver broadband box. from the broadband box there is the lead that plugs into the electric and the round black lead thet goes into the wall somewhere( NTL WIRED THAT PART) SORRY TO BE SO STUPID
ON THE LINKSYS BOX AT THE BACK THERE is that silver connection a bit like a phone socket abd beside it there are 4 black connections. should i maybe try one of those ? will it wrecjk the laptop working if i unplug it ?0 -
Your setup of the connection between the NTL box and the Linksys router sounds fine, and the fact your laptop is connecting wirelessly to the router and the fact that you are on the internet means it is set up correctly.
However I'm still a bit confused as to how your desktop connect(ed) to the linksys router. Is there (or has there ever been) a cable (network cable) between your Desktop PC (the one that can't connect) and the linksys router?0 -
i have just spotted a we speedbuster box that sits beside the computer which says usb adapter that goes from the back of the computer and it looks like it should be lit up and isnt ???? maybe it is this thing that is the prob
have just connected this box to another usb at the back of the computer and think i am sorted .i would not have thought of trying that only for you saying about the connection to the actuall Tower.
thanks again B33R
BACK IN BUSINESS THANKS AGAIN0
