Are Accords Gas Guzzlers?

Hi all, I am currently searching for a reliable family car with an automatic transmission, a bit of speed and a nice interior. I have stumbled upon a 2.4 Litre 2004 Accord which fits the bill, however I do have concerns about the fuel economy of the car, particularly as I live in Greater London. I have heard that these cars can be gas guzzlers.

I would appreciate it if anyone who has experience of this car could give me some advice or confirm what MPG I can expect from this car? Thanks!

About 31 mpg according to this site : http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/

( I looked at the 2003 model, I assume that'll be the same as yours ).

What sort of driving do you mainly do ? 2.4 litres is a reasonably large engine ( OK, it's not massive like in a Range Rover or something, but a fair bit more thirsty than, for example, a 1.6 or 1.8 ).

A friend of mine ran one for many years, a 5 speed auto with comfy leather seats and used to say he got low 30s which didn't seem too bad. The honestjohn.co.uk site has people reporting their 'real mpg' and the weighted average coming out to something roughly in line with the manufacturers claims. You can probably get close to 40 on a run and nearer 20 round town, like anything with that size petrol engine made a decade ago. My mate's didn't seem especially 'guzzly', but obviously a 2.4 litre auto uses more fuel when pottering around town than say a 1.8 mondeo manual.

Obviously it's very dependent on what proportion of your miles is nipping up the road to the shops or the station or driving into the city centre at peak times or cruising round the M25 outside rushour.

Thanks for all the replies. I do mainly short runs but want an auto and something with a bit of zip. I have seen the official figures but never trust those anyway. I also have a bit of a heavy right foot.

The problem I am finding is that 1.6 litre engines are too slow for me, 1.8 pretty much don't exist apart from Astras and 2.0 engines only give a coupe of miles per gallon better than a 2.4 litre accord at best.
I am trying to justify getting a diesel, something like a 2006 Vectra 1.9 diesel, but with such low mileage of around 5000 miles per year currently I am struggling. I keep hearing about expensive repairs with diesels.

What car did your friend drive, and was it mainly town driving?

Any large petrol engine with an automatic gearbox is going to be a bit thirsty... but is really going to make a big difference to your fuel costs considering your relatively low mileage?

I have 2.0 petrol Accord. It's not particularly economical but during short/stop start city journeys, I can't imagine it's much worse than the car in front or behind.

On the plus side the Honda VTEC engine is fairly bullet proof/reliable.

If you're doing low milage and want something with a bit of zip, then don't worry too much about fuel economy.

a 2.4l is going to use more fuel than a 1.4l but not by as much as you'd think. Especially in an auto you might find the 2.4l is better on fuel. But at 5000 miles a year the difference is not going to be high

We are talking about the Accord 2.4 petrol auto right? That's what he had. Either a 53,4 or 5 reg I think. Most of his trips (number of trips) would have been in town but his overall mileage (number of miles) might have been more non town. But generally he got reasonable low thirties mpg, not massively different from the quoted figures which never reflect real-world anyway.

Everyone's profile is different and we are going back 5-10 years so his detailed records, even if they still existed, are pretty irrelevant to you.

If you're only doing 5k miles a year, if you do it at 25mpg that's 200 gallons of fuel, at 30mpg it's 167 gallons. 33 extra gallons times 4.5, call it 150 litres, with fuel prices getting down toward £1 a litre call it 150 quid. Nothing to worry about in the grand scheme of things for 5mpg at low mileage. Don't bother with a diesel at such low mileage.

My journey includes a mixture of town and country driving so can't comment on the city mpg. Overall I get approx 34mpg.
