10's of thousands of rechargable batteries are thrown away every year...........and they are 1000 times more damaging to the enviroment than ordinary zinc carbon batteries..........
You are possibly talking about NiCd batteries - we moved on from those rather a long time ago..........

Have a look around on ebay for solar powered battery chargers - you can pick up a decent one for AA and AAA batteries for under £10 easily. I've got the 'exide' one that always seems to be around on ebay and it's very good, but I'd recommend looking for one that has a charge indicator that can take more than just AA size (thou see below about converting battery sizes!).

In UK summer weather it takes around 2-4hrs to recharge 4xAA batteries - even with minimal sunlight on a cloudy day in winter you can charge up 4 AA batteries in around 8 hours. :)

Another thing is if you only have a AA charger and you want to charge up AAA batteries, you can get battery converters that make AAA batteries the same size as AA batteries so you can charge em in a AA charger (you can get converters for most battery sizes apparently, I only used the AAA to AA one).

    Cheers.

Note that you must only use these if your charger's output current does not exceed the amount required for AAAs. This may not be a problem for solar chargers but certainly will be for "fast" chargers.

Also, to state the obvious, you won't get the same capacity as an AA cell if you put an AAA in an adaptor!

  • So, we get from a good bargain from Richer Sounds to destorying the environment! This is why I love this site!

Why worry about a few batteries? Worry about the 1billion Chinese and about the same number of Indians who will be wanting their fair share of the Earths resources soon!

I bet the people who are saying about the environmental impact do one or more of these things...drive a car or fly somewhere on holiday, eat food from further away than their local farmer (whose cows are producing damaging gasses), flush their own waste down the toilet (to be reprocessed by an energy intensive purifying plant), use some form of main electricity, use a computer to access the internet....Need I go on?

Basically - good spot for a Billy bargain on the Richer Sounds - the rest should be put in a different discussion area about the environment!
(I include my bit of tosh too!!)

I guess if you won't read the thread I'll just have to quote myself:

Could it possibly be because buying rechargeable batteries is the bargain of the century compared with feeding power-hungry appliances with "bargain" packs of dry cells?
