How do I drain out the oil exactly?
If you don't know, maybe its better to get an oil extractor and suck it up through the dipstick tube. Something like this for £14 then you can use it for oil changes in the future:

or

Get the oil warm to thin it before trying to extract it this way.0 -

wow, these things are getting cheap, I was researching pela pump a year ago and they cost £45 each.
These aren't any good for a lot of cars though. The dipstick tube is very small on some cars and you can't get a suction hose through there.0 -

A Pela will be more expensive, because it will last longer. There are cheaper options, but there's a reason Pelas will cost three times as much.
(There'll no doubt be some naysayers along soon to tell you that vacuum extraction is the work of the devil, etc etc, sludge, blah, leaves loads of oil in yada yada. They are entitled to their opinion, in spite of the fact that boat owners have been doing it for years, and manufacturers like Mercedes specifically state that vacuum extraction is their recommended technique for oil removal. I'll continue happily using my Pela)0 -
That one in the second, Amazon link gets very good ratings from 15 users. I Haven't got one myself as I always do it the hard way (and was unfortunate enough to strip sump threads a few years back which is why the simple extraction pump has its appeal).0

So, where exactly do you think the oil is going? To use oil, it has to leak out or be burnt. Therefore, unless you have a leak, the more oil you use the more oil you must be burning...catoutthebag wrote:Oil consumption Is high.
We could be on to the real issue here...catoutthebag wrote:Well I did put a tonne of oil in couple weeks ago
Starting point is check whether the oil level is over the level of the max on the dipstick. If yes, then draining some out may solve the issue. If not, then you're into the realms of the [STRIKE]bodges[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]cheats[/STRIKE] solutions proposed by EdGasket..0 -

Is it a 1600cc Hillman Avenger? I would know the answer for that.
You must have missed the 'Vw golf' part or '18 years old' (which would put it as mk4 );)
Thankd fellas. I'll check oil level tomorrow. I know there's no leak as confirmed befure and although I put a lot of oil in last time. ..I think it's being burned very quick.0 -
Really need help now.
Taken to garage today to try pre fix the car befure mot. He said it's still smoking. He's tried to disconnect the breathers but they're fine.
I've suggested he put a thicker oil and so he's going to try that now, but think a new engine is needed.
I'm not in a position for that. My mot expires next week. I just need a pass tik the summer at least.
Any other pointers if the thicker oil doesn't help when he calls again?0 -
