It's petrol so that rules out a knackered turbo on a diesel.

Smoke colour is relevant, but if you've been topping up oil and not water, then we have to assume it's oil. Which means valve guides or piston rings, likely cause would be abusive driving (revving hard from cold) or lack of proper maintenance.

Garage was unable to do my mot as it would have apparently failed on emissions test.
So he said something about taking some oil out? (Would it be caused by too much oil)...or putting in an additive?
Well I did put a tonne of oil in couple weeks ago

Though I did remember the same garage say it was smoking when I first got it and had cam belt done
Your mechanic has saved you the cost of the test by telling you it will fail. Very honest and helpful of them. As the car is scrap without an mot its worth trying an additive.
Check your oil level is below the maximum then talk to your mechanic again and ask what he would do.

    Example of additive. http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/wynns-stop-smoke-oil-treatment-325ml
  • This is a common issue, and the smoke is oil burning.

To see for yourself, get the car up to normal running temp, i.e with the fan cutting in and hold the revs on at 2500 rpm or so. Within a couple of minutes it'll start pluming smoke out of the exhaust.
  • the mot guy was probably just doing you a favour. to fix oil leaks on 17 year old car is just pointless. just 110k on it too so its just done lots of short trips to the supermarket and back. you might end up thowing good money after bad to strip the engine and repair the seals

    Here's what you do:
    1) Drain out existing oil.
    2) Fill to the minimum only with 20w/50, a cheap thicker oil that won't smoke so much on a worn engine.
    3) Get a bottle of Wynn's emission reducer and put in the petrol tank with a full tank of expensive petrol like SHell V-Power
    4) Book the MoT
    5) Arrive at the MoT with your engine hot; either take it for a good run beforehand or drive there in 2nd gear so the engine is revving at about 3000rpm.
    6) Make sure emissions are tested right away before the car cools down again.

If that doesn't work there are other things to try but only for a more experienced person.
(e.g. ATF in spark plug holes to free up stuck piston rings; water injection in the inlet to remove carbon)

    Good Luck,
    Ed

PS. If your air filter is old and clogged, change that too (or if you are a cheapskate take it out just before the MoT but just make sure you don't suck a pigeon or any other foreign body into the engine!)

    Seriously, what car/make/model/engine/fuel ?
    1.6 petrol

This is clearly a full and complete answer to Strider's question as there has only ever been one car made with a 1.6 petrol engine...oh, wait...

    :wall:
  • Thanks fellas.

How do I drain out the oil exactly?

No amount of additive will get it through if its getting past the rings.

I don't know. "1.6 petrol" is not sufficient information about the make and model that you were previously asked about and comprehensively failed to answer ;).

Is it a 1600cc Hillman Avenger? I would know the answer for that.
