Thank you all for your replies.

We have been to the 'travel clinic' at our GP and following the advice received decided to opt for Malarone which for a two week trip (23 tablets each plus my GP knows how to charge for a private prescription) works out as quite the expensive.

I saw that the Dr Fox site works out as considerable cheaper for generic Malarone but as no one seems to have used them I will probably end up using Asda.

You don't need a prescription from your GP, the pharmacist is able to prescribe them.
  • I've used Simple Online Pharmacy for them before

Actually a bit cheaper than Dr Fox at the moment, as no prescription charges. I also got free delivery.

Very few people need to avoid the sun while taking doxy, we all take it and have never had a problem. If we avoided all malaria medication that had the possibility of side effects, we wouldn't take any!

Very true. The point is that different people may be affected by different side effects, so each person must choose the medication that is most appropriate for them and for their particular journey. It is not a good idea simply to ask"what's the cheapest?".

Having said that, I think that many people use Malarone when cheaper options would be suitable.
  • Generally most people suffer less and milder side effects with Malarone than Doxycycline and Lariam, so this is often the reason people will go for the more expensive option if they've never taken medication before, as they don't want to risk having to avoid the sun all holiday!

Patient information leaflets will usually tell the frequency of side effects, so it gives you an idea of the ones that will most likely occur.

Sorry I came in late, but both OH and I ordered with DrFox and the service was excellent. Mine came 4 days later, but OH was only 2 days. I'd checked out first and was satisfied that the request was reviewed by a GP and they were appropriately registered for prescribing.

We opted for Doxicycline to cut the cost and the only time I had mild symptoms was after I'd taken them for 10 days and I did so before eating. I felt light headed and sick, but that went away 10 minutes after breakfast. Always took them with food afterwards and no problem at all. No issue for either of us in regards to the sun despite being under it for most of the 2 weeks. We used suncream as we normally do and experienced no sun burns.
