That's what the ISP has asked me to do. Seems to have worked. I assume the router logs will identify blocked events (I don't have access to the router here). Quick question - does an ISP have any role in stopping this kind of thing or are they being honest when they say its nothing to do with them?

" I assume the router logs will identify blocked events"

Logging every out of state packet is the nuclear option. There's nothing you can do with the information (you blocked a packet from 1.2.3.4? And?) and it can be of fearsome volume.

No. An expensive boutique integrator that sells managed security services at their end would. But they would be charging you rather more money.

How many times is this hoary old chestnut going to arise? Do you honestly believe that the software designers of the line management software just plain forgot that some people turn their kit off overnight.
Well said,i'm fed up with Plusnet telling me not to turn my router OFF every night to cure abysmal speeds.I must admit the last guy did admit they are told to say this but says it never makes any difference.I've tried leaving it on for 4 weeks and made absolutely no difference.
  • How much of this is relevant to a Virgin cable-connected modem?
    Thanks in advance.

It could be relevant to pretty much any device (router, modem) - just because the method of delivery to your home is different, it's the data part....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Many thanks, and that's what I suspected!

I have now turned WPS OFF on my router as it is never used anyway - funny that I have rarely if ever seen that and many other of the detailed precautions given here in consumer PC magazines and so on (I get Micromart, Computer Shopper & PCPro nowadays) with network security articles.

I will now (gradually, there could be a lot to do!) look at implementing some of the other precautions.

And thanks to everyone else who has given advice in this thread!
