    your solution doesn't cover.

    .

My solution eliminates the possibility of it being a hack .
Disabling WPS on the router is a trivial matter , and setting a complex password should be default behaviour anyway ..

With both these in place, you can be sure your wifi ISNT being hacked and must then look at who has access to this password , as that would be the only avenue left ..

Most users haven't a clue about sniffing MAC addresses and spoofing.

Im sure that's what both my next door neighbours think too ;)

    Security by obscurity isn't a thing ..

there's the WiFi password and the admin/login passoword - change both to be long/inconvenient. Keep the router behind a locked door (wireless means you can do this), and just for good measuer, put it on a timer switch.

Two belts and a set of braces, but I'll bet you a quid it solves the problem ;-)

plug the old one back in and monitor it, the answer is probably far simpler than a compromised router in the middle of nowhere. 0.75 GB a day is not a great amount
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

Log of router. Nothing at all (no log retention?) Guess I could try it live again. To verify whether wifi related or other...

Powering off the router every night might end up with poor ADSL speeds as the exchange might see this regular disconnection as a line fault / poor performance and will possibly drop the speeds lower and lower in an automated attempt to improve reliability of the connection.

Check your system log configuration. You should be able to record more than that

Usage this month has averaged 0.75GB per day.
0.75GB per day is not a lot. Is it possible someone working there has been using youtube or iplayer or a similar video site?

Could be someone was torrenting, perhaps they got into the router config and opened up ports for torrenting/downloading/streaming, but now they cannot.

The TP-Link TD-W8960N is way past support cut off depending on the hardware version (v1-v7) and has known vulnerabilities, I wouldn't waste any more time on it.

    I'm assuming it's probably a V1 or V2.

Concentrate on the new router that you've put in and monitor that one.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
