Cheap way to call Japan and from Japan?

Skype has a terrible connection, and I don't want to use it anymore to call landlines and mobiles, anyone recommend a cheap way to call abroad, particularly Japan? Also, cheap way from their to call the UK?

I use it everyday, does not need wifi

That may be down to the quality of your broadband connection or mobile connection-the service is only as good as the data link it's running on.
