When you move back here, stay with friends then rent a place initially. That'll buy you time to house-hunt properly, and save you making an expensive mistake.

Thanks all. A bit of background. I presently live in Thailand (so no sitting outside any houses at the moment). Last December I found a handful of houses I liked in Devon, made appointments to see them, flew in for the holidays, checked them out over a couple of afternoons, and then chose the one that suited me. Except for physically looking at houses, everything else (even hiring a property management company to handle renters) was done online.

I was hoping to do the same with this house. But, with the overhead noise, seems not. It's clear that more effort is needed and that's why I'm here asking if anyone knows of areas that have a history of being less noisy than others.

"Further out Surrey" excellent - that's the direction I prefer (away from London). I do have a wee chunk of change to throw so that's not the problem. Windsor was a thought originally but after reading complaints I shelved the idea (I'll look again). Does anyone have experience with Virginia Water or the Chertsey area? I can take some noise (like I mentioned, I live under a flight path now).

And use Google maps to get an idea of traffic at various times of day.

This sounds like the best plan. In some areas just a mile or so can make the difference between background noise and mantel-piece rattling.

Virginia Water is generally very quiet (main roads are noisy), but dude, if you can afford to move there you can afford to move a hell of a lot further out and away from the flightpaths altogether.

Thanks all. Egham, because the job is there and walking to work was the original plan. I might end up staying overnight in the areas I would consider living in just to see how noisy it really is. Yesterday my search reached as far as out as Hook (not too bad unless traffic is at a stall).

Also, bear in mind that there are different flight paths for different times of the year. We don't get many coming over in the winter but I can just about hear their rumble in the background. Once it gets warmer (or there's a nicer day in the colder months) they are non stop right over our house from 6.30am to 11.30pm.

I can't say I've got used to it, I tolerate it, but find by the middle of the summer I need to get away for a while from the constant noise (planes, cars & people!).

Englefield Green sits between Egham and Virginia Water. Both Egham and Englefield Green have a student population as Royal Holloway College is located walking distance from both.

Virginia Water is lovely, very quiet, but as previous poster has mentioned, you pay a premium for it!

Do you have a budget in mind and is it definitely a house you are after or would you consider an apartment? There are a couple of private estates in the area, but they come with hefty service charges.

Good luck with the M3 and the constant noise of Chinooks from Odiham!

If you can afford Egham and Virginia Water then you should also check out Ascot, Sunningdale, Windlesham, Winkfield and Warfield.
  • Again, thank you all for the information. It's been seriously helpful.

Ouch. So staying at a few hotels over the holidays is out. Pity.

"Good luck with the M3 and the constant noise of Chinooks from Odiham!"

There's always something. No wonder people live in caravans (too hot, too cold, too noisy, too much traffic). Now off to google "Chinooks from Odiham".

"Ascot, Sunningdale, Windlesham, Winkfield and Warfield".

Thanks. I'll check them out. I do know a bit about Ascot and Sunningdale but not the others.

I'm going for a house, no private estates (no fees). Also, I do not want a large house but finding small (less than four bedrooms) but not tiny (Victorian shoebox) hasn't been easy either. Four bedroom houses seem to be popular everywhere and that's too much house for me (stuff tends to expand to fit the available space). The range is around £600,000. I realise that's not a massive amount (hence the 'wee' injected into my explanation above) for the areas I prefer but I have managed to find a selection that are doable.
