Who do you holiday with?

I holiday with my OH and enjoy it. I do all the planning, he pays for a lot of it, and he speaks 5 languages which I feel gives me better access to fully enjoy our holiday.

However...getting him from home to the destination is always the biggest task. He is an absolute nightmare to travel with, but once we've arrived, I couldn't be with anyone better.
  • Usually with OH, and the last holiday was Norway! Can I ask where you are going? To see the Northern Lights? Do you think your friend might think you are happy to do the organising and research? Because the thing is I always take charge of that bit because I like doing it and I'm more organised and OH doesn't really do anything and that suits us. Perhaps you need to have a word with your friend and compromise, like..."I'll sort the flights if you book the hotel", or "I'll research the excursions if you research some nice places to eat out."

I love doing the planning and I've never felt resentful of having to do it.

Doesn't matter if it's my partner or a friend I like to make sure we get a great deal .

It does tend to mean I get to pick the hotels or areas a bit more but I'm mindful of what they want too and don't just choose to please me.

Perhaps I ought to travel with you then ;)

It is true I get to choose more if I take charge, but this role is just assumed to me. It also means I have to be the one to print out all confirmation, hold it and produce it when asked. I think I don't really get to sit back and relax like this until we arrive there.

I'll be going Tromso. And yes to see the northern lights.

I am very organised with things like this but my friend doesn't know that as we've never holidayed together before.

What I like about doing this though is that I can look for the most cost effective deals (important if money is tight). My friend has a bit more disposable income than me so wouldn't bother to research much. I will ask her to search for restaurants and places to eat though.

Maybe it's a case of the more you eat alone the more comfortable you get with it? I've had to dine alone in evenings at hotels for about 15 years now and I know when I started my daughters' called me Mrs no mates and thought it a fate worse than death.
I used to think the lone diners reading books or kindles were maybe lacking in confidence. Do you read at the table at home? Anyway, nobody, other than other lone diners, notices who is where.

I am also going to Tromso , with my husband .
I do all the research and planning , booking and packing ! That's because I love to do it . When will you be in Tromso ? We will be there in February for my birthday .
  • I'm jealous...that's where I want to go next! Anyway sorry for sidetracking. Yeah I'd give her something to do/research, so it's not all on your shoulders, but as you say on the positive side you will be able make sure you get a better deal.

I have visited all 50 states in America on my own, in spite of asking and even almost begging folk to come with me for the last few trips.

My next trip is going to be a bit exotic and it looks like I will be getting hit with a rather large 'single supplement' for this one :(

I go on singles holidays or group hols normally. I like to have company if I want it, and if I get on with the other people - at night time at least, evening meal and going out for a few drinks. You can still please yourself entirely what you do and when but most evening meals are included. Only problem can be having the confidence to not get tied down by someone wanting to hang around with you, ha ha.

I'd happily do a weekend city break on my own for the culture aspect, I'm going to Russia next Easter which will be a group with a guide, these hols are normally a mix of lone travellers and couples/friends. I don't have the confidence to do Moscow/St Petersburg justice on my own. Have also done AI beach holiday totally alone and met people no problem, but more than happy to spend days on my own.

I'm not sure these days if I would go away with a friend or friends.... in actual fact most probably only with someone I'd met and kept in touch with from a singles holiday would work best if I did.

I usually go with my husband, we have travelled extensively together including 6 months backpacking so we are pretty streamlined at it.

I also have a long weekend with a group of friends every year, we have done this few time now so have established what we are good at (I am the "tour guide" for example!

I have holidayed (mainly backpacking) alone in the past and wouldn't hesitate to do it again!
