  • For every 'daft' cashier you get ten daft customers. I used to have plenty who would say, need to pay £5.20, give me a £10, I go about giving them £4.80 and then they'd come up with a random 50p and be like 'does this help?'

    No. No it doesnt.

Cashiers may also be wary as there are plenty of people who try and scam using change and faffing about with different notes to try and get them to give the wrong change. I've had someone attempt to do that to me before as well.

I hear customers say this when they hand over a £20 note for £2.50. But whilst in the process in getting the note from wallet or purse, I see several fivers and enough coinage in there.

Why give larger notes when you have smaller ones?

This is one of my bugbears, especially first thing in the morning when the float has only just opened and all they are buying is a 40p newspaper.

If they need the change for a hospital car park or to pay a debt off at work, fair enough. I don't mind those kind of scenarios.

Either that or you get handed a ruck of change from last night's beer money!

Speaking as one of those people who prefers to break down the larger notes rather than hand over a smaller, it comes in very useful to have small notes in those situations where the recipient really has a very limited float (taxis etc). So yes, I'll try to keep a reserve of a couple of fivers, and hand over the £20.
