BOB, sounds like you have a phobia against old notes lol.

Never seen the ticked notes (as you describe) they are prolly just a tick to say 100, bank cashiers/others sometimes tick the last note in a pile which makes that pile 100 pounds or whatever.

The taxi driver took it because it was legal tender and he would have no problem passing it on as change or paying it into a bank.

And I've had no probs with bank cashiers, but then If I get notes they're usually from the ATM.........why do we call it ATM when we call them cash machines or cash points or hole in the wall. ATM must stand for Automatic teller machine - sounds very american to me. Has anyone else noticed the increase of the term "cell phone" I don't want to hear that! it's called a "mobile phone" here! The BBC is a big culprit in this, putting it into scripts so the shows can be watched by those stupid yanks who can't speak any other form of English!

I once had a customer ask me to swap some £20 notes for £10 notes, but they had to be a certain serial number :rotfl:

Until I read this thread I never thought that much about this and always assumed that the change was put on top to 'weigh' paper notes down - in case they would get blown away.... shows how wrong your assumptions can be.

In both shops I've worked in, we've been trained to count change back to the customer, but in what order was never mentioned. I tend to give the coins first as this is how I'd prefer it, and of course the counting back slows things down a bit and makes things clearer so prevents mistakes (and scams!).

Also we're trained to never visibly inspect a note (for example holding it up to the light) as this can offend people. We are trained to check notes by discretely feeling them as there are certain subtle tactile features that are usually not reproduced on forged notes, not to mention the quality of the paper. It's also our policy not to give torn or especially tatty notes to customers as change.

As a customer I feel no hesitation in refusing torn or tattty notes, and I also refuse Scottish notes since these aren't always accepted (by humans or machines!)

Well, if all I had was a Scottish note, I'm sure you'd accept it. You'd be daft not to as they are legal tender, same with ROI notes. Nowt wrong with them.

I think you might mean Northern Ireland notes not ROI. Northern Ireland, like Scotland, uses its own notes but they are still Sterling and legal within the UK (although it can be fun trying to get people to take them). The ROI used to use 'Punts' which were not the same as Sterling but they have converted to using Euro now

Spot on! And colour is not spelt color, centre is not spelt center and a meter indicates use of gas, electricity etc. whereas a metre is a measurement equal to about 39inches!
I could go on but rant over.

It bugs me when I get the coins shoved on top of the note, but what annoys me even more is people who just put the change down on the counter..Grrr!

In terms of giving the correct change for a tenner/twenty, I was always taught to not put the note they gave you into the till until you've got their change out. Then when they say "I gave you a £20 note" you can say "no it was definately a tenner, look I still have it here...." & wave it at them.
