GARMIN nuvi 2508

Is anyone else having huge problems with the GARMIN nuvi 2508 Sat Nav which was purchased December 2014? It fails to give directions when reaching junctions with several options that require action and not ‘continue to follow route’ that was miles back down the road. Road names are different to the actual road name having turned around several times and driving down the roads options trying to find the stated one. Consulting a map at home I find there is no such road in the area.

The ‘RECALCULATING’ warning if a wrong turn has been made does not now appear to be an option on this model which is totally necessary having to continually guess the correct road direction. Oblivious that a mistake has been made the machine automatically takes me miles out of my way on a huge detour, twice down very narrow lanes in the middle of nowhere.

Infuriatingly I was less than ¼ mile from home and it told me to turn in the opposite direction which would have involved around 2 extra miles to reach my destination had I not know where I was. I have had some horrendous journeys having been taken miles off route and totally lost, it is not always safe to stop to try and consult a map.

Is it a poor or faulty model made for the Christmas market, is there a way to programme the device to a useable state or should I buy another brand?

Helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.

    What car do you have?

    Peugeot, Renault?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Thought it may have been due to an athermic windscreen but I don't think Honda do those.

Give Garmin a call, they are usually very helpful

  • What has the make of car got to do with anything?

Is this a new problem? Have you recently updated maps or anything?

Edit :- Oh, I see regards the make of car ;)

    Hi Richard

Thanks for your question. On the few journeys I have had to use it the problem occurred, recently a friend has been with me & he cannot understand the instructions plus lack of information. I have updated the maps at lease twice when prompted which come free for the lifetime of the device.

I will try Garmin but thought if others had the problem I might stand a better chance of resolving it.

    Hi Moto2
Thanks for your very interesting comment about Athermic windscreens which I was not aware of so looked it up & so far the Jazz is not mentioned but will double check.

From experience of using a Garmin 1390T, using the settings menu correctly is of critical importance. E.g. 'shortest distance' rather than 'shortest time' can result in failing to use an "obvious" motorway route, (just because it's a greater distance, of course).
I got caught by this and crossed all of Austria via their main roads after being told by sat-nav to come off the motorway I was on!
It only does what it's told to do!

Warning if buying a Sat Nav

I wish the person who bought me the GARMIN nuvi 2508 Sat Nav for Christmas 2014 had checked that the 'Re Calculating' warning is not now available on a long list of models. As annoying as it can be if a wrong turning is taken or as often the case the instruction is not clear. What happens now is you are totally unaware and taken on a huge unnecessary detour.
  • i used to have a tomtom which was very good but I smashed the screen on it and had to dispose of it.

Then I bought a garmin nuvi 50. It's aweful with redirection, if you miss a turn it wont smartly reroute you correctly it insists on doing a u turn right there and then. When you could just turn in at any small road and get back on track. Its aweful. First few times I did a u turn and felt like a complete muppet. Now I look at the birds eye view map and navigate myself .

Thanks London Tiger. At least the U turn warning lets you know you have gone wrong. I would rather know I had made a mistake & turn the car around when safe to do so than being taken on a massive circular detour and not always being put on the right road. I will investigate the Birds Eye View you mention, however, the purpose of the Sat Nav was to be able to drive safely listening to the directions. I don't think the earlier models had these problems.
