  • Well the theory is (or was), (or might be) that everyone can inspect the source code on open source programs to ensure it is genuine and has no backdoors.
While propriety programs with close source code written by commercial firms may have all sorts of horrors and secret backdoors put in for the FBI/NSA or MI5/GCHQ in them.

    However:
Pretty well no one actually compiles/binds the open source raw code themselves - instead just download the final .exe file from the website which kinda make all this a bit irrelevant.

Many open source stuff will somewhere make use of pre-complied binary sub routines from other sources (such a Broadcom's ADSL chip routines) to which no one will have access - and we have no idea what horrors or backdoors are lurking in those sub routines.

In reality while everyone can check the open source code to make sure it is OK - actually no one at all is doing this: everyone thinks everyone ELSE is doing it. Hence we have had some holes in open source systems discovered in the past year which had been there since the year dot and no one noticed - the so called 'heartbleed' bug being the prime one.
