me and my partners time since 8 this morning, and the need for me to be in the house for the rest of the day today to arrange and wait for someone to install

How long does it take to make a phone call and find out a re-installation date? 5-10 mins? Hardly "the need for me to be in the house for the rest of the day"
No, wouldn't claim that I would have be doing any "money making activities", but I'd have been free to spend my time as I choose, rather than forced to spend it clearing up AO's mess. Is that time valueless?

    Frankly, yes.

They're re-installing free of charge and giving you a £35 goodwill gesture, British gas are also reporting them - what more do you want? £50 per hour for you to sit on your !!!! all day doing nothing?

You cant sue or claim compo for ifs and buts
The cooker cost £400 - what do people think is a fair amount to expect refunded? (My initial reaction was the full cost, but perhaps that's unreasonable?) And what do you think is the best way to proceed from here?

£10,000 and not a penny less.

Seriously, get over it and move on. Yes you're being unreasonable.

This is the kind of attitude that seriously winds me up "how much can I get for my minor inconvenience".

P.S put the 35 quid towards a gas detector alarm - everyone should have one.

Oh that's already sorted before I came on, I was very lucky to get one at all today, let alone book a precise appointment time. "This afternoon maybe", or sometime Monday was the best they could do...

You didn't think to try someone else? If that is your only option then ask them to call when they are half an hour away so you don't have to wait in for them.

Took about 30 minutes of phoning around - they are all very busy over the weekend seemingly - the installation needs to be today or tomorrow to avoid the need for me to take time off work (and incur further costs for AO! :))

Does that seem reasonable to you?

TBH I see paying the costs of installation as a fundamental obligation, given I have evidence that they incorrectly installed it, so in essence £35 is the only gesture they are making as a way of apologising for putting my life, and the life of my wife and daughter, at risk.

Thanks for your opinion and advice.

You do seem quite wound up. Please note that my entire reason for posting was to find out what people considered reasonable and fair, not wring out the maximum possible.

The one I went for was perhaps number 22. Good thinking regarding the warning call, but I have to say I've never found tradesmen overly reliable in that regard before...

Your life may have put at risk but nothing happened so no financial loss was incurred. You can't claim for something that didn't happen.

What about car's fitted with faulty parts that sometimes causes the car to catch fire with little warning to the driver to get out? Everyone driving or using that car has had their life put at risk. The manufacturer is only required to recall the vehicle and fix the problem they don't have to compensate the owners for having their lives put at risk.

There's a difference between what is legal and what is just, of course.

Take them to court. Don't cash the £35 cheque as that will imply you've accepted the offer as full and final settlement of the issue. The court will look at the issue and decide the case based on what is legal and just. They will look at your actual losses incurred and award you that amount.

That may be necessary, but hopefully not.

Irrespective of my specific case and any refund, I'll want some confirmation of what action has been taken regarding the installers. AO (and/ or the contractors it uses) have an obligation to ensure that the people it sends to install potentially lethal equipment are qualified and competent. I didn't die as a result of their negligence, but what of the next person?

You've got the gas safe installers ID number you can check on gas safe's web site to see what has happened to his registration.

He may have his certification withdrawn until he undertakes further training.
