Belgium raised the alert status for its capital Brussels to the highest level on Saturday, shutting the metro and warning the public to avoid crowds because of a "serious and imminent" threat of an attack.

A week after the Paris attacks carried out by Islamic State militants, of whom one suspect from Brussels is at large and said by authorities to be highly dangerous, the city was placed on the top level "four" in the government's threat scale after a meeting of top ministers, police and security services.

I appreciate it's probably not going to affect your mindset much, even if they do lower the level, but the Belgian government allegedly are due to review the security situation and it's measures in Brussels tomorrow afternoon. :)

If you don't want to stay in Brussels it's really easy to get a train to Brugge or Ghent, equally as nice as Brussels and only about an hour by train.

If it helps we have friends living there and they have no plans to leave. They're still going to work, child going to nursery etc. Plus there are a good number of UK civil servants there and they have not been withdrawn.

Try not to worry, just keep your wits about you as you should in any city. Or as peachy suggests, Bruges is quite lovely (although possibly also subject to threat because of the high number of tourists?).
  • Supposed to be going there next week...

Is there anything that can be done? I'm guessing most travel insurances won't allow you to do anything at the moment.

Out of interest, did the UK government advise not travelling to Paris when the attacks occurred last weekend?

    Sure there is.............

There's the Grand-Place and the Parlamentarium
    Both worth a visit IMO
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

I would recommend this anyway. Brugge is so beautiful.
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

If you don't want to go, and it isn't a work related trip, then don't if it makes you feel better. It is entirely your choice to make.
