Easiest way to extend your internet is with the plug in powerline adaptors - depends on your home. There pretty cheap.

The are great when they work, but that "depends on the home" is key. I think there is a lot of noise on my mains circuits. I started with AV200 powerline adapters. The connection to my study was fine, but the connection to the living room was pretty flaky.

I replaced the AV200 units with AV500 units and they cope better, but they have a coloured LED speed indication. If it comes up red it is connecting at less than 20Mbps. The connection to the living room always shows a red LED, but it does what I need.

You should be able to find a pair of Zyxel PLA4211 AV500 adapters for £40. If you want to go for a better brand, Devolo and Solwise seem to have the best reputation.

Thanks everyone, did i read it right though that the powerline adapters need to be on the same ring/circuit? My upstairs and downstairs are on separate circuits, I thought they only worked on the same circuit?

I am no expert, but I don't see any real physical reason behind excluding different circuits and extension leads. This possibly can affect the max speed a little, but that's it.
