At present my internet comes into the lounge through the phone line/socket, I'd like to extend it to upstairs and the other end of the landing, ideally with another hard wired box/phone socket, is this possible please?

The short answer is yes. Without more detail I can't say too much more than that.
If you are happy running wiring around the house, then you can probably run cat6 cable to whatever locations you like.
Homeplug may provide a simpler solution.0 -
It's usually better to leave the modem as close to the master phone socket as possible and use an ethernet cable to extend the network side.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Why not wireless? Or powerline (mains) adapter(s)?0

I did this because hard-wired is faster than wi fi. I just got a very long cable and ran it upstairs, putting it under carpet wherever I could.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

Cat 5e cable will be cheaper and more flexible, and more than sufficient unless you're running really long cables. It supports up to 1Gb/s. It can be terminated with RJ45 plugs or wall sockets. If you need multiple devices connected to the extension, you can use a switch (or hub), and/or a wireless access point.
Anyway, it's best to have your router close to the master socket, and then run separate Ethernet and phone cables inside the house.
If you really want to run just one cable for the phone & network, you can use the spare wires in the Ethernet cable to carry the phone signal too, but it's far from ideal and can cause interference problems.0 -
There are no spare wires with gigabit. Cutting it down to 4 or even just disconnecting one pair means 100Mbps.If you really want to run just one cable for the phone & network, you can use the spare wires in the Ethernet cable to carry the phone signal too, but it's far from ideal and can cause interference problems.
If the phone wires you are running inside the ethernet are in any way connected unfiltered to the ADSL pair I imagine it would be a recipe for disaster as the ADSL signal is extremely low level by the time it reaches your house and the ethernet signal very much stronger so the crosstalk even with twisted pairs is likely to scupper ADSL speeds.0 -
Easiest way to extend your internet is with the plug in powerline adaptors - depends on your home. There pretty cheap. I have 2 for when the OH needs the TV downstairs, and I get dispatched to the spare room upstairs. They work fine for gaming on the PS4. You basically connect the router to the plug downstairs, connect the device to the plug in adaptor upstairs, and off you go. Doesn't do the phone far as I know.0

Thanks pendragon, did you plug the cable into the back of your modem, and run that cable upstairs? Also, how did you terminate it upstairs?0 -

"If you're thinking of buying a hub, just buy the cheapest"
Can you even buy ethernet hubs any more? I actually needed a 10BaseT hub recently (explicitly a hub, for reasons too tedious to go into) and couldn't find one new; I ended up finding one in a cupboard, but otherwise would have got one from ebay nth-hand. Had I needed a 100BaseT hub (yes they exist, although they were never very common) I suspect I'd have been out of luck.0
