I don't work for Microsoft. To my knowledge, MS has been silent on this issue. I'm just another poor slob trying to help. The fix that I used, and that others seem to have used, all of them successfully, is to follow this link:
    Windows 10 ISO file
Follow the instructions to download the correct MediaCreationTool (32 or 64 bit), run the tool, select "Upgrade this PC" when prompted, then let it do its thing. Win10 will completely update itself. So far, everyone who has reported trying this has been successful.
Luckily this suggestion actually worked for me (64-bit, AMD). Thanks Canprof. It took several hours with no intervention and now it is working smoothly - the start button, Edge, and even Chrome does not lock up. What a relief; hope it lasts! I did not turn off Norton, either.

Or if you really want to go back AND you upgraded within the last month...

You need to get to Boot to Advanced Startup Options. This page tells you how to do that (look for screens near the top with "see more recovery options")
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html
TO GET THERE start off with OPTION 1 which accesses Settings (Windows key + I is the shortcut).

I suppose you lost the recovery disc you created when (sorry before) you started using it, that would allow you to recover????

  • I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 much against my better judgement, 10 days after the release in July. Only did it 'cos most people I know are aware I worked in IT for 40 years & had been upgrading & got a swathe of questions. My machine is new < 12 months had a few issues including this one & rolled back. Waited till October & upgraded again. Things much better this time & 3 weeks of flawless running until this morning & this business of Cortana & Start Menu Critical error etc.

Found a suggestion on YouTube which has worked for me I think there may be multiple potential solutions as it depends where in the menu system the problem lies. However this is what I did.

Once you've logged in & you got the message fire up Windows Explorer from one of the icons on your desktop there are at least two (This PC & the one with your user name). Select the file menu on the left side, then Open command prompt/Open Command Prompt as administrator.

On the command line enter the following at the prompt:-

    sfc/scannow

followed by pressing the enter key. This will take a while maybe as long as an hour or more - I went shopping.

Make sure before you close the command line box that the process has completed.

Reboot (logging off is not enough) then logon in the normal way.

As I said there is no guarantee with this it depends exactly what has gone wrong with your system. There are other methods posted on the Microsoft Community forums.

In my case a few of the modern apps stopped executing a day or two beforehand. Running the System File Checker while it may not say there are errors certainly worked for me (unless it was an almighty fluke). Good Luck.
