Bank Blocked My Account

Options
Received a payment from a recipient for an ebay purchase -

They informed their bank (i presume) they havent received the item or alike -

their bank contacts my bank - saying potential fraud

today my bank has put a block on my card/account

They said do I know the transaction/amount. I said yes, they want me to send in delivery information or tracking of some sort... In which I have just done... -

I said how long will the block be on my account - They said they do not know... When this issue has been resolved... -_-

Can banks do this? This is a severe inconvenience, and it shows it as being signed for...

Does this even involve the banks? As it was an ebay thing? Is this a civil matter or...?

I didnt even know banks could do this...

    How were you paid?

If it was a bank transfer and the sender doesn't deny making it, then it's not both/either banks' business.

    Submit a formal complaint ASAP.

More likely, your buyer is a crook that made the payment from some hacked account. In this case you are a victim of fraud, not the buyer. It's possible that you'll never see this money again.
  • I was paid via bank transfer -

^^^ That is exactly what I was thinking... This has nothing to do with the bank(s) and this is the first time this has ever happened to me, so I was a little confused when they said they have put block on my account as well as my bank card, like !!!!!!

Haven't even given me a timeframe of when it will be sorted... so im supposed to just sit back, and twiddle my thumbs with no money? my weekend plans I had, what about those...? They havent even said anything about other ways I can help/support myself in the meantime - just a straight block

A formal complaint to who? the bank or ombudsman?

Are there are torts/statutes/cases which I can also include as this is ridiculous

Just search the board for 'blocked' and 'frozen' - and you'll find many cases.
Unfortunately, customers are powerless while banks were given carte blanch when they suspect fraud/ML. I think they do suspect you to be a link in a chain laundering the stolen money. That's why they ask for proofs of posting.

It's very unwise nowadays to have all money in one account and, possibly, to accept bank transfers when selling anything expensive to strangers.

Re complaining, find the information on your bank's website. Only after exhausting the internal procedure you can take the case to the ombudsman.

    Very odd.

There are stories here about punters accidentally making a payment to the wrong bank account and their bank washing their hands of the matter, even though they're suppose to offer some assistance and advice.

In this case the banks appear to have gone above and beyond and too far.

Whose idea was it not to use PayPal?

It looks odd only because the presumption was, most likely, incorrect.

  • speaking with you guys now.. i may have been a victim of fraud myself... not the other way round -_-

he said to me 'hes having issues with paypal, give him 10 mins'

then he said 'still issues, can he pay by brank transfer'

in my eyes then, i didnt see that to be any issue

now my accounts blocked... it does make sense now... hmm

Yeah, "having issues with paypal" sounds very convincing... rolleyes.gif
  • maybe I was preoccupied at the time with just doing a sale, so you could say it was my fault...

nevertheless ive spoken with my bank etc and informed them this needs to be sorted tomorrow LATEST as I have plans, buy food etc etc and kept reassuring me theyll speed it up...

He also said these things happen across the board, where if a person contacts their bank regrding an issue, the other persons account will get immediately blocked pending investigation? He said it doesnt matter if its ebay related or another...?

He really sounded like some kind of intermediary for ebay or paypal and not in anyway non affiliated...

    ridiculous

Unfortunately (for you) you cannot dictate when your account will be unfrozen. They will have a process to follow and IMO unlikely that you will have access to this account before next week.

As the second part is a blatant nonsense, I wouldn't put much trust in the first part's 'reassurances'.
Face the facts: the person you spoke to knew nothing about the case, had no powers for affecting anything and just tried to get rid of you softly.
