I have just had a man visit because I cancelled my licence.I told him I only watch catch up on my computer but he said I have to have my tv"deactivated" so it cannot receive a signal.Never heard anything about this before and it says nothing about it on the letter he left, nor can I find anything online. Can anyone advise?

The TVL is for installing or using a TV for viewing live broadcast.
If you want to be 100% in the clear simply cut the aerial lead as the other poster suggested and then do a new install tune on the TV.
Did this conversation happen at the door or did the inspector enter and see you had a TV installed and showing live TV? if the latter then you are probably in trouble.0 -

It was at the door and I don't watch live tv,don't see why I should have to cut my ariel and don't know how to do a new install tune though maybe my sons do,thought they just came round with a detector van?isn't it up to them to prove if I was watching it.As I said it says nothing on their website about disconnecting it0 -

Its irrelevant really if you are not going to let them in it does not matter.
But you need a TV licence to install OR use a TV for live TV.
If they do gain access, ie you are out and another family member lets them in, and they see the TV is connected and installed for viewing live TV then it may get tricky.
If you are not viewing live TV then simply remove the TV aerial cable and retune your TV.
Im fairly sure you can retune a TV or at least find someone to assist, it is very simple.0 -
Just leave the aerial lead out. You don't have to do anything else. And TBH you don't even need to do that. There is no requirement to detune. (it is only an additional safeguard)
As long as they don't actually see live TV then that is all that is needed. You or anybody else in the house would be a fool to let them in in the first place, so they should never be in that position.
They would need a court order to enter and get proof that the TV is capable of receiving live transmissions. and no judge would ever issue that order as there would be insufficient evidence to grant it. ' I think they watch live TV' isn't enoughThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
