Curly vs straight hair on women

  • As I have got older my hair has gone from having a bit of a natural wave to having a more pronounced curl to it. I used to blow dry it every day which was a disaster for the condition and it got quite frizzy.

I went on a couple of holidays about 10 years ago where I didn't have access to a hair drier and realised my hair could look quite nice when it was curly and started to let it dry naturally from time to time.

Then about eight years ago I got alopecia and the last thing you want to do is pull at your hair to blow dry it when it's shedding, and the extra volume the curls gave it was quite welcome. As a bonus I found laying off the heat styling really improved the condition.

These days most of the time I let my hair dry naturally with some Aveda Be Curly to encourage the curls. I do use straightening irons very occasionally - I like to have a different look and it does look more polished. However I know if I used them all the time my hair would start to look dull and damaged so I don't do it often. Plus I like to do my own thing and not just follow the herd - too many people overdo the irons and their hair just looks burnt.

I've got naturally curly hair and have fought to straighten it since my teens, using an iron before straighteners were invented . Now I have shortish grey curly hair and I hate the way it looks like a perm when I leave it curly it makes me look older than I am and I'm already old enough thanks. , I do let it dry naturally but I bought one of those hot air revolving brushes which is brilliant and just use my straighteners to give it a bit of a flick here and there and I'm happy with it now at last.

But as has been said if we are curly or straight we are never happy with it are we?

  • I'm sitting watching the news and would love 'newsreaders hair' it would be glossy, swishy with some body and a little volume at the crown. Instead I have poker straight fine baby hair which has a natural parting in the fringe. I have to was it every 24 hours. Very little choice of style. I occasionally curl it but this would be for an evening out. Perms are very damaging to my hair type. Well, when I last had one in 1994 they were!

I have super thick, curly more ringlety coarse hair that is an absolute nightmare

I have had my hair chemically straightened in the past to make it easier to control

Curly or straight my hair is a nightmare to be honest as it always wants to do its own thing

    I prefer straight

I have curly hair and it suits me.

I do think that poker straight hair looks more polished, which is why I think many celebrities straighten their hair. Curly hair can look a bit wild, even when styled nicely. The one thing I don't like about having curly hair is that you are more limited in how you can cut it whereas people with straight hair have much more choice.

I think my wavy hair looks scruffy, I dont feel like its done until its straight.

My hair used to be curly, it was in really good condition.

Years of straightening & processing mean it no longer falls in shiny ringlets, its bushy & frizzy ish.

Anyway, I've been straightening mine for nearly 20 years. Since toni & guy brought straight sleek hair back.

I would like kate middleton's volume blow dry.
It would be lovely to have been born with Kate's hair but unfortunately even she needs serious hairstylist attention to get it that way!

I remember reading one year that Nicole Kidman spent something in the order of £100k on having her hair styled! At which point I realised it was time to give up, and just go with my curly locks.

I've not read much of the thread; my hair is poker straight the longer it gets the more straight it hangs. It won't hold a curl for long and even then needs a lot of help! I wish I had curly hair, even just some nice natural waves but alas no. :( xxx
