Curly vs straight hair on women

  • When I was a teenager, I would have loved Sandie Shaw's shiny straight hair as mine was naturally quite wavy. These days I do straighten my hair as I still like the look, although when I got married this year, I had extra waves put in on the day and it looked lovely. Aren't we strange at times?!

    I have thick, long, curly hair and in the summer I leave it as it is.
    In the winter though I get far to cold waiting for it to dry so blow dry and straighten it always using plenty of product.
    I love it both ways and often depends on my mood.
    Problem with the curls is that they can often look untidy, especially as if I put a brush anywhere near them it would just become one big frizz ball.
    Straight is definitely easier to manage.

  • I've long fine wavy hair - my sister has thick riotous curls & each of us covets the other! I don't straighten mine - I want long white hair eventually & heat is not my friend for long term long hair.
    Plus I wear it braided 98% of the time, so it's wave or straightness is moot.
    A friend "made me over" & while the results were long sleek & glossy, it wasn't "me". Whereas when I played with chunks of sponge & deliberately upped the kink in the braids, when I turned it all loose, my husband grinned that I looked as he remembered me um years ago.

    If I had a choice I'd have curls. Instead I have length, which pulls most of the wiggle out, but makes maintenance Loads easier!

    I actually put rollers in my hair :rotfl: Personally I think the current trend for very straight hair is quite unflattering.

    I had dead straight hair all of my life & I so wanted a massive bush of curls, then I discovered perms! :D After about 20 years I decided to go straight again, Mr Duke said perms were for old people :eek: & how much better my straight hair was, so I've stuck with it because I am almost the old people now but don't wanna be. I'd much prefer a bald fashion for women to be honest, save all that faffin' about.

    Oh, I've got dead-straight hair and I've spent hours (and £££'s) over the years, trying to put a bit of life into it.

    You can't fight nature though, and despite perms, heated rollers, curling tongs and the like, my hair simply will not hold a curl for very long. And the perms!!...I've got a lot of hair so perming it was a disaster, I looked like a deranged poodle on steroids. Plus, it grows really quickly so I'd soon have flat hair on top and frizzy ends. :(

    I can't quite believe how long the craze for poker-straight hair has lasted. It flatters very few people and it's never a good look on women of a certain age....see Jennifer Aniston, Kym Marsh, the woman who plays Harriet on Emmerdale, Katie Price, etc etc. My sister has beautiful, long wavy hair which I've always coveted. I don't think she has ever wished to have hair like mine!

  • Like barbiedoll I have the straightest hair you can imagine, I've had perms and walked out the salon and watch it gently unfurl..

    We all probably want the hair we don't have, I have quite a lot of hair but it's fine and just hangs limply despite all my efforts.

    I'd love a wave , a kink just ruddy anything that isn't poker straight.
    Frizz, I dream of frizz !
  • I sometimes see women with hair which is straightened & very flat, and think it's not the most flattering style for those individuals.
    I love wavy & curly hair and only use a small pair of straighteners on wisps at the front.
    I guess it's a matter of what suits each individual best, and not slavishly following trends.

    I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!

    Mrs G is perfectly happy with her curly hair. So am I, as generally speaking, I find the just dragged through a hedge backwards look very attractive.
  • My hair is fine with a bit of a kink in it. I have never straightened it. I just wash it and leave it. I'd love curly hair and wish perms would come back into fashion. I loved my permed hair in the 80's!

    Personally I sometimes think straightened hair reminds me of lank greasy hair but it depends on the individual person.
