    The bottom line is it's his responsibility and as such he should expect to pay.
    A few years ago I did an almost identical thing, I had protected the area in which I was working, but accidentally knocked over the torch and left a 3" long burn in the carpet.
    I immediately informed the client and offered to pay for the full replacement of the carpet, even though it looked fairly old and had about half an inch of cat hairs on it.
    If he has any sort of conscience, and is any decent sort of tradesman who cares about his reputation he should be offering to put it right.

    How much was your carpet? I always keep remnants incase of accidents to mine.
    To my mind the value of the carpet would make a difference to what to do next, he may just prefer to pay for it, if its not too expensive, to save his ins going up. If he has ins
