Plumbers burned carpet

My plumber was doing some work on radiator piping and has managed to melt and burn a spot in my carpet about the size of 2 50p pieces. He says it went through his heat pad.

I'm annoyed because the carpet is only 4 months old, and the burn is really noticeable; but part of me is semi-sympathetic as things can go wrong....

Anyway the nub, what should I get him to do to put this right? Carpet repair (not keen on that as it'll prob look !!!!), discount on the whole job, any thoughts...?

  • I would say give him the bill and let him worry.

A bit of plywood under the heatmat or better still ask for the carpet to be lifted.
Plain old fashioned lazy careless working.

Until someone pulls him up, he will continue been lazy
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • New carpet.

It's only 4 months old so not a lot can be deducted for existing wear and tear. Plumber can either pay up himself or claim on his insurance.

  • Small claims court.

  • He should have public liability insurance claim through that

He's got an entire en-suite to finish installing, I guess I should wait until he's nearing completion?

All his other work I'm very happy with....

  • It's his fault, he needs to sort it out for you.

I had a plumber come out a couple of years ago to do an emergency repair on our toilet. He neglected to put any sort of cover down over our marble bathroom floor - and scratched it to bits when he removed the toilet. Not cheap, but in the end he had to sort that.
  • Assuming he is a legit business as opposed to a 'friend of a friend' being paid cash in hand then he should have adequate insurance to cover him for this sort of event.

Always raise this sort of issue as soon as you become aware of them; we all know how insurance companies try to renege on their responsibilities so don't give them any excuses. It looks like you've told him about the problem and he has made his excuses but what remedy did he offer?

As the carpet of relatively new don't be too surprised if the insurance company offer a repair and in fact a good quality repair can be unnoticeable; if they do a repair and you are not happy put it back to them to resolve.

You have more of an issue if he isn't insured, unless he simply agrees to pay up or reduce your overall bill the equivalent amount the only option would be to make your own claim. Rather than using the Courts go to your own insurance and try to claim from them and let them try to take the plumber to Court to claim the money back (if they feel it is worth the effort); it's what you pay insurance for and saves you the effort of going to Court and risking that you may still not actually recover the money you're owed.

The fact he did this with no thought to protecting the carpet , such as lifting it where he would be working with his blow torch would make me wonder about any other corners he might like to cut
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Well, no, you need to tell him now that it needs sorting to your satisfaction. You don't need to go getting quotes for the work yet but you must flag it up, then he can be talking to his insurers.
