Being genuinly shocked by the fact that people can make mistakes kind of puts you on the high horse because it means you think it's shocking to make a mistake which on its own account means you think you never make mistakes. You can see how he got to that conclusion, right?

Sorry I can't see the logic in this. Just because someone is shocked (unsurprisingly in this case), by the fact that a mistake has been made does not necessarily mean that they are somehow horrified by the realisation that mistakes ARE made. For you to then extrapolate this into - just because they are shocked that a mistake HAS been made, it somehow means that they as an individual DON'T make mistakes, is a quantum leap of imagination. In fact, it doesn't make sense at all.

The OP does not think it is shocking to make mistakes - they think in this instance it is shocking that a bank has sent out three other account holders' statements in the same envelope as theirs. And it is not just a mistake, it's a breach of the Data Protection Act.

    Well researched, albertross!

Well, knowledgeman, I was also shocked to receive a letter from a stranger who now has access to my credit card number, address, and knows quite a lot about me! I just didn't post on here. But my response was just the same as the OP. And I make plenty of mistakes, but hopefully they don't have the potential for the same impact.

Now I know what you do for a living, I am not just shocked, but absolutely horrified by your defensive posting. You are defending the indefensible.

Top post Albertross! Nice to know that the fraud department are so concerned about fraud prevention, it really makes me feel safe!
Knowledgeman - You work for a Bank. You are happy to state that 'mistakes happen' and imply it's no big deal. So why, when I make a mistake in operating my account does that become a big deal, and cost me £30+?

Mistakes do happen. I do not have my credit card number on my statement and am surprised you all do. I have my account number on it but thats different.

I would be more concerned that my statement was late. I am sure that are worse things that can happen like removing the wrong kidney from your body under operation. A mistake but a pretty bad one. I love it that normal joe bloggs thinks, bank, governments and companies cannot make mistakes!! i wish I was perfect!! Well done y'all you must be so proud!

No that would be the criminals and fraudsters

The ones which the banks cover innocent victims against

Funnily enough costs like that are forgotten when their all crying about charges

Errors happen in all walks of life and when it comes to technology and humans their is always scope for error

If this was a massive issue happening on a daily basis fair enough but incidents like this comparativly speaking are small and really are never going to be completely gone

I can confirm that I have checked one UK credit card and one South African card. Both have the same account number as on the credit card.

It may be your personal view to be more concerned that your statement is late, but that does not seem to be the view of some posters here. Quite frankly, I don't really know or care when my statements arrive, but I certainly do object to statements going awry. The wrong kidney being taken from your body is not a mistake, it is a tragedy.

Banks have a duty of care to ensure that people do not become victims of fraud. This is vastly different to the mistakes that I make at work and for which I hang my head in shame and endeavour to put right - I do not just simply shrug my shoulders and say 'well everyone makes mistakes'.

PS if your credit card statement goes to someone else, the chances are it is either going to be very very late getting to you, or you won't receive it at all. And very possibly that your account has been wiped out and you are suddenly in debt.

By accidentally putting peoples' credit card statements in the wrong envelope and sending them to complete strangers, you mean?

I do not suppose the person who puts letters in envelopes would just say that either. So tell me how would you prevent that mistake from happening? You can't. Mistakes happen and you have to accept it. All we can do is learn from it. All I would say to the OP is that it wasnt theirs that went missing it was someone elses.

All we know is that someone posting on here works in the Fraud dept of a bank and has simply shrugged his shoulders, and moreover, taken a sarcastic and aggressive view of the OP's post, which he could simply have ignored.

I think I would probably start looking at the basic system of putting statements in envelopes (or even of having envelopes perhaps). If, as you say, there is a person doing this, well I'd certainly start with mechanisation!
So what have you learnt from it? What should we be learning from it? How will what we have learnt from it change anything?

You say that the OP it wasn't theirs that went missing it was someone else's - this is very caring of you isn't it - the principle doesn't matter because it wasn't the OP's own credit card statement. So now, like so much today with a lack of attention to detail and a lack of responsibility and care for the customer, the Banks' clients are having to post on statements to other clients.

How lucky do you feel today? Or tomorrow....
