No Aerial For TV Only Virgin Media.

I will be moving house next week and the house I'm moving to has no TV aerial only Virgin media cables. Now my TV is fairly new and looking as the back it will take the virgin media cable. If I connect this will it provide free view TV and freeview HD channels?

    No.

To get Freeview you need an aerial
To get Freesat you need a dish + set top box.

To get anything from a VM cable you need a VM contract + their hardware.

Is the new house reasonably near to a TV transmitter? If so it may be worth investing in a roof top or loft aerial to get Freeview ... very MSE ;)

Only in Milton Keynes where IIRC the cable company has to provide a basic TV service for £0 as aerials were banned.
  • Ok thanks, looks like I'll need an aerial then. Anyone recommend a decent indoor aerial?

You would also need a Virginmedia box to connect the cable to. It wouldn't work just sticking it in the back of the TV.....

You don't specifically need a VM box, just a DVB-C box

An Openbox is not too expensive but it isn't plug and play, they aren't too bad to set up though.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

If the only TV coming into the house is currently cable, what about phone?

If there's no BT-type phone line then it might be cheaper to get your broadband, phone, and basic TV through virgin.

Doesn't VM bar any other equipment on their network?
I'm not sure even if you get it connected that you'll get anything down the cables.

I can see a hand full of channels if I connect a VM feed to my VU+ receiver, not tried it for a while though but had them running for a couple of months when it was all I could get until we'd finished our building work.

A NowTV or Apple TV box will give you some channels.
