I suppose the follow up question to your post is:

What is the motivation for OP to make up this story?

If we take the post at face value then a potentially vulnerable person has just lost £5k due to fraud. Sounds pretty plausible to me! :o

Good advice on the whole on this thread, and Azari's post is intriguing. It would be interesting to know how liable Paypal are in this situation.

Since when has vulnerable become a synonym for greedy?

I really wonder how people fall for these type of scams they are so obviously a con. I read about a seemingly sensible man that fell for the inheritance scam where a bank in Africa will give you documents to show your related to a millionaire that died without an heir as the money will only go to the government.

He thought he'd make some money and never saw anything wrong with it. What sane person thinks there's nothing illegal in using false documents to pass yourself off as someone else to claim an inheritance that isn't yours to receive. If you do that your obviously committing fraud and could face a prison sentence for it.

There are people who lack what's referred to as social intelligence which can result in gullibility.

Only yesterday, this research, showing teens and tweenies are a scary shade of credulous.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

The OP hasn't returned to the site since four hours after he started the thread.

Money flying into and out of accounts, 485 messages (4 per minute). It really doesn't sound plausible.
Faster Payments between UK bank accounts can be done in up to 2 hours (up to a limit of £2k per transfer); I withdrew money from my Paypal to my bank account the other night and it went through in 2 hours or less.

I don't think it's the speed at which financial institutions can move money that is not plausible, rather the fact that the OP was interacting with the scammers at that rate and the fact that Paypal did not flag the account as having seriously suspicious activity.

True, but this is Paypal we're talking about here: they relocated to Lichenstein to avoid having to comply with UK financial rules a few years ago...

So either a fantasist or just too embarrassed. Or possibly the story wasn't what actually happened but a bit massaged. Not worth our time either way.
