Doesn't it take a few days for a paypal payment to reach your bank account though? So this surely couldn't have all happened in the space of a few hours.

    Nope, it takes minutes nowadays.
  • the tricky bit is where you gave the scammer your paypal password - which you are forbidden to share by the terms of the paypal agreement

So this leaves you in a sticky position.

    Not really.

The main problem here is that Paypal, according to the OP, allowed money to be moved from his account without making any attempt to question how it got there, despite its origins being extraordinarily unusual and suspicious.

The fraud did not in any way depend on the crooks getting the PP password since they could just as easily have asked the OP to make the transfer to his bank.

I still have the feeling we have not got the entire story because, as told, Paypal's behaviour is bizarre.

Two hours for all this to have occurred?

Money flying into and out of accounts, 485 messages (4 per minute). It really doesn't sound plausible.

I suppose the follow up question to your post is:

What is the motivation for OP to make up this story?

If we take the post at face value then a potentially vulnerable person has just lost £5k due to fraud. Sounds pretty plausible to me! :o

Good advice on the whole on this thread, and Azari's post is intriguing. It would be interesting to know how liable Paypal are in this situation.

Basically a money mule scam - you inadvertently launder the cash for criminal activity, and are left at the end of it being the contact everyone had and all being reclaimed. You'll find out more from scamwarners.com, and maybe visit 419eater.com to get your own back ;-)

It's hardly 'inadvertent' when you know you are getting paid 10%
