nationwide believe that they do offer excellent savings rates.
Their recent privileged member offerings wouldn't have attracted a second glance from anyone familiar with MSE or Moneyfacts.

They have been a big let down for about a year.

Presumably we can only withdraw money from our Portman accounts when those nice Nationwide people let us know what type of account we hold and its number. I'm not holding my breath :rotfl:.

On a separate matter, the two places I know where there are dual Portman / Nationwide branches, the Portman has the superior facilities - but it is the Portman branch that is to close. In one place, the Nationwide has two counters (down from three after a refurbishment  ) whereas the Portman had four, having taken over an ex-Lloyds Bank in a prime location.

Nationwide's focus is probably more on the internet and automated facilities than on old fashioned face to face customer service.

imo, nationwides savings rates have been a let down ever since it introduced its "windfall signaways", thus guaranteeing itself it wouldnt face a member led conversion challenge nore a hostile bid.

i cant recall an occasion in the last 10 years where nationwide has had a savings account in the best buy tables. SIGH.gif

if anybody wants to be "proud to be different" they can fix for 1 year with nationwide @6.20% gross.

ex portman members can transact on their accounts from today, the accounts will be closed issue nationwide accounts, formerly portman accounts. ;)

http://www.nationwide.co.uk/savings/portman_rates.htm

our local nationwide branch cashier positions also went down from three to two after a refurbishment, :( across the road halifax remains three cashier positions.

central bristol portman branch is also much nicer than the two nationwide branches.

At least Nationwide are better than Britannia. I can't bear to watch the cringe inducing Britannia TV ads or wait for 15 minutes on the dreaded Britannia phone line listening to utter garbage about the "benefits of mutuality" while being told for ever that you are first in the queue for their range of crap accounts.

Why do they need to bother? NatWest stupidly does the mutuals' PR for them.

Nationwide Flexaccount is virtually unique in not charging for foreign ATM or debit card transactions.

big four banks offer a completely different service and appeal to a completely different customer than building societies do, brittannia and nationwide should be comparing themselves with the ex building societies (now plcs as plcs are not the same as banks)

wonder who nationwide will do a deal.gif with next.
