Sports direct refund policy

Does anyone know where I can find what the rules are regarding displaying a refund policy in store. I have just tried to get a refund from Sports Direct and was advised that they have an exchange or credit notes policy, no cash refunds. When I asked where it was displayed I was advised it is on my receipt (which you obviously get after the purchase) and it was also displayed in small writing about 5ft above my head (which makes it about 10ft from the ground). The staff said that this is a complaint they receive every day, but that it is company policy that it is displayed at that height.
I also asked what their policy is regarding clothing, as people cannot try all sports clothes on in the middle of the store, and I was advised that they do have changing rooms, although they don't have any signs advising of them as they are only to be used for customers that specifically ask for changing rooms! Having been in several Sports Direct stores, I did not know that they had changing rooms. I just think that this is poor retail practice!

You have no statutory right to a refund (unless the goods are faulty) fror something bought and paid for in a bricks and mortar store. Most stores have their own more generous terms and conditions but as you have found out, not Sports Direct.

Shops don't have to give a refund unless goods are faulty so Sports Direct don't. Many other shops have policies that go beyond their legal requirements. I think their zero hour contracts are crap too. :(

There is no legal requirement to display a returns policy BTW.

Legally I don't think Sports Direct is doing anything wrong.

Unfortunately all you can do is learn from this and next time ask where the changing rooms are. They do usually have a small sign somewhere near the tills pointing out where they are, as Sports Direct keep them locked.

Just out of interest what were you trying to return? I've returned clothing to Sports Direct stores many times and have never had a problem getting my money back in cash. In fact I've never been given any other option other than an exchange.
My most recent return to my local store was 2 weeks ago and got a cash refund.

Also their fitting rooms are usually at the side of the cash desks for some reason. Well all the stores I go to are, but I don't use them as they are always locked and trying to find a member of staff to unlock one for me is like finding a needle in a haystack

This why I only buy from Sports Direct if I have been able to try the item on because they do not refund only exchange or give you a credit note. The changing room in my local store is only a pull around curtain next to the till but at least you can try things and know they are suitable.
Talking of credit notes my Dad a couple of years ago purchased a cagoule from SD, changed his mind and was given a credit note. On trying to use the credit note a couple of months later, it was for £19.99 was told it had already been used. He tried to argue how could it have been as he still had it and they said the assistant must have given it him back in error. He told them he hadn't been back in the store since but they wouldn't budge. He said he walked out in disgust and foolishly left the credit note with them otherwise I would have gone back to store with him and asked to speak (argue) with the manager.
  • I know i am a numpty buying from sports direct tho i like their stuff normally. I visited Nottingham City centre store yesterday. I was advised to buy a pair of Karrimor D30 Excel ladies trainers. I trusted that i was being sold something i could rely on. I paid £59.99. When i returned home i looked on their website and found the same trainers for only £29.99. How can they rip people off to such a degree. I understand that online and store prices can vary a little but by this much is disgusting. I liked the trainers but hate them now i have paid twice as much. I suppose this isnt a valid reason for a cash refund.
  • Just encountered this same problem today of only having a credit note offered as refund on some kids clothes that were only £10.50.
Its a shame because now I will be so cautious when buying from the store. I would boycott the store but sportdirect offer some good bargains. I don't think it is a good policy for business but maybe I am wrong.

No, they don't. They buy previously respectable brands, stick the name on their own label crap, dream up inflated RRPs on these items then pretend they are reduced and therefore a bargain.

Not the only retailer to do this by any means but one of the most brazen.

Although they are well within their legal rights not to provide refunds for goods where you have changed your mind.
