If it was my child, I would just be grateful that the school is not prepared to put the children and staff at risk, regardless of the loss of a bit of money.

I think that parents should thank the school for being so protective. I don't think they should expect them to use school money that could be put to better use when the decision was made with the best of intentions.

If I understand it, an alternative is offered so go for that if money is the issue to you.

I am seriously considering cancelling a trip to France due to take place in the next few weeks. I would stand to lose hundreds of pounds and, yes, it is annoying, but what price peace of mind? I would probably spend quite a bit whilst there so I am sure I will not be that out of pocket. No doubt children would be given pocket money to spend whilst there so that won't now be necessary.

I wouldn't expect a refund from anyone, I would just move on.

    Completely different scenario

    It's YOUR decision to cancel.

It's in the next few weeks.

    If you read the OP

The SCHOOL made the decision to cancel without disussion

    It's in 3 Months time.

As I said in my post school cancelled, school should refund in full. I would just like to know where the school get the money from because you can't take it from money that is for staff, equipment, building maintenance etc as it's not legal and a school as a public body is regulated on what it can spend it's money on. Only option is PTA or staff pay. If staff have to pay then that will be the end forever of school trips.

On the insurance they take out when organising these trips.

Unless of course their reason to cancel is not insured, then it's the shcool that has to pay the parents.

    It's that simple.

The school had plenty of time to and should have consulted.
Knee-jerk reactions are rarely the best option especially when there is no pressure to make such a quick decision
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

    Already posted at #27

And not relevant to this scenario.

As you paid a deposit on a trip to Paris and it was the school that cancelled the trip then you should be entitled to a full refund of all money paid.

I don't think you quite understand what deposit means !!!

Anyway to the matter in hand as to the rights and wrongs on the School's decision here all I can say is that they have every right to say yes we will go or no we will not go.

Look at it another way lets say they went on the trip and something similar happened as per the last weeks events there would be uproar from the parents, papers and social media all claiming the School had made a bad decision, If parents do not like this then the bottom line is tough and stop whinging about it as you would soon be moaning if the above may have taken place.

I understand now why the rest of the world see's the UK as a whinging nation as it seems the majority moan for the sake of it and have nothing better to do.

It's not a matter of whether or not they have the right to to say 'go or 'no go'
It's whether they should of wiped out people's deposits without any sort of consultation and without even taking a breath after the weekend's events.
There was absolutely no reason to act so quickly and a bit of time to gather information, opinions and advice first would have been the route taken by most responsible people.

You are completely wrong it is the Schools decision and nobody else's, There is nothing to debate here at all. and I refer back to my previous point about the trip going ahead and something similar happening, The School would be hung out to dry.

A deposit can be refundable or non refundable and this case is non refundable, If the parents do not like this then tough.

I didn't say otherwise so I'm not sure how I can be completely wrong

What I did say was most responsible people would not take such a quick decision.
Try reading posts a bit more thoroughly before making such quick decisions and replying ;)
