County halls have to cancel trips in cases like this, they can only go own if the parents get together and take over the booking and ensure th school has nothing to do with it from then on.

This is how my son managed to still go on a New York trip two months after 9/11.

I've just read in the i that Hollande has ordered trips by French school groups to be cancelled.

It's one thing to risk your own life, but bring responsibly for a number of pupils is a different thing completely.

So long as they are given the opportunity to have that responsibility. As I see it if the school made the decision and NOT the parents, then the parents are legally entitled to have a FULL refund.

  • I think they are entitled to a full refund and I think it is a shame the trip won't go ahead.

However, I do think that asking teachers to take on the added responsibility under current conditions is asking too much. In such an emergency it is hard enough to keep your self safe let alone a group of teenagers. I certainly wouldn't do it.

County Hall will have made the decision, not the individual school. I should think the contract is with PGL and not the school, so they should be persued for a refund if your insurance doesn't cover this.

The trip is in Feb-3 months away.;)

If it was next week then fair enough.

There must have been some T&C's regarding this trip so the OP must check if the school has the right to do this.

And again there is no government advice against travelling to Paris.

    I know.....;)

    It would
n't stop me going, but it would stop me taking a party of school children with me.

    Unlikely, this far in advance.
More likely that the balance is due imminently and the school pulled the plug before having to pay the balance

Not in all Local Authorities. Schools here book trips without any reference to the LA. The schools decide on trips, cost, numbers etc. and just comply with legal guidelines.

If I was a teacher I wouldn't want the responsibility of pupils on a trip to Paris even 6 months away.

As a parent I wouldn't want my child travelling to Paris.

As far as I see it the School cancelled the trip due to Teachers pulling out so they cannot run the trip. The school is responsible for refunding parents in full. The problem is that the school cannot legally use their funding for this type of expenditure unless the trip was part of the curriculum. They do not have the money to refund as they passed on deposit to third party. If they refund it will come out of "school fund" i.e. money parents have donated through fundraising events to provide "extras" in school. If parents find out their money is being used for this and their child didn't go on school trip they will be annoyed.

In your position I would accept alternative trip as I wouldn't want to lose money, I don't think it's fair for school fund to reimburse and I know the school doesn't have funds for this and I doubt the LEA will bail them out.

Of course it's fair for the school to pay up. They cancelled ergo it's their responsibility. I don't care if you or a teacher doesn't want to go, it's perfectly safe so if the school is going to make an irrational decision then they can pay for it.

Do PGL even do city trips? I would have imagined they'd be in a camp in the country near Paris (I see nothing actually in Paris on their site), so the terrorist threat will be basically non existent. Just cancel any excursions to the city itself if they must.
