Told e-mails undeliverable because of IP address block

  • Great comments received that cause me to assume I have an open relay problem which has put me on a blacklist with Hotmail certainly. Sorry to be thick, but how do I change this?
Incidentally I have been set up with SMTP.tiscali.co.uk for many years and it has worked ok. I just changed this to fleurtelecom.co.uk but a test message to a Hotmail address went straight into my outbox rather than be sent. If all is as before this will eventually go off but I will get the undeliverable message.
I am reluctant to change my e-mail address if I can help it as is logged with more people and companies than I can count.

If I were you OP, I would simply contact your ISP, get the correct incoming and outgoing address for their mailservers , mention your issue with the blacklisted IP (which they most likely will be aware of ) and go from there .

Are there still people using that version of Exchange that came with a default configuration of being an open relay?

It was prevalent in Asia a decade or so back but it's been a while since I heard about it.

    Not so much -
BUT , there are a LOT of people out there, who have been tasked with setting up an exchange, and don't have a Scooby doo what they are doing :)

During my time working at an MSP , in a 2 year period I probly reconfigured 5 or 6 mail servers that had open relays .. So the issue does still exist :(

Most ISPs wouldn't touch Exchange as their mail server for their customers. Majority of their servers are *nix and AFAIK Exchange doesn't run on that. The normal reason for an open relay is some pillock who hasn't a clue starts running their own mail server but using the ISPs mail server as the next server in line so it appears to be the ISPs mail server is open

This network you have at home, does it include your own mail server?
  • I don't have my own mail server - just set up for e-mail many years ago according to the instructions given then.
I have now received the following answer from Fleur which doesn't fill me with confidence unless my problem is widespread...

    Thank you for your email.
Currently TalkTalk are experiencing problems with their email services. They are aware of the issues and are working on resorting normal service as soon as possible.
