The back door seems to be fooling the phone that it's activated with a different SIM. If you then put another SIM in or restore or update the phone at any point through iTunes or iCloud, it ends up being locked again because it's never actually been unlocked.

Definitely incorrect and years out of date if you are referring back to the old jailbreak unlocks that were possible up to about iOS 5.

There are people who have access to the Apple system that will also send IMEIs to the server that controls unlocking (for a fee), it's likely against their terms of use with Apple but it results in exactly the same unlock as is processed when the SP sends the IMEI to the server.

If you look at the 'legitimate' unlockers, they all appear to charge different fees / quote different timescales depending on the provider. That suggests the access occurs at the SP not Apple.

I would imagine it's a good earner, for those working for O2 or Vodafone on minimum wage - couple of clicks that's another tenner earned...

You'll note that I didn't make any statement as to where the people with access worked.

But good to see you now accept that it is a proper unlock, just from another source ;).
