We have a chromecast and now tv box

We have chromecast for mirroring.
We then got Now TV box for 4od.

Last week, I got a free Amazon fire stick when I signed up to Fuel Broadband.

We aren't on Amazon Prime, but having seen HUKD saying it's going to be £59 for the year, we might be tempted to buy as I miss the 1 day delivery option.

Is it worth having all 3 for the TV? I was going to sell the fire stick on ebay, but I'll need it if we sign up to Prime.

Any thoughts?

  • The only stuff worth watching on Amazon prime costs extra anyway. If you think you're gonna get your money moneys worth from deliveries then yes otherwise I wouldnt bother. There's more stuff on YouTube.

The best use of an Amazon Fire Stick is for running Kodi which is why I will get some more sticks when the price probably drops in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales coming up.
Unfortunately Kodi can not run on the Now box or Chromecast.

I bought a NowTV box for £10 a couple of weeks ago (the outgoing white unit).

I have to say that the service is pretty good; I signed up to the "month" (actually 2 weeks!) movies trial, and have watched several movies. But I cancelled the monthly contract, as I can't see me watching all of their offerings.

The NowTV box is really a customised Roku unit, and you can open up its access and install a Roku app with a bit of fiddling about.

Mine came with a couple of Sky Sports day passes, so I watched the Mexico F1 race live with one. I may pick up other passes if I feel like it and can find them cheap.

I might consider the Amazon offering for the ex Top Gear folks, but I'm allergic to spending money.

I also got a new Apple TV with some Tesco Clubcard vouchers, but it's going to need some apps to be viable.

What exactly is kodi? I saw loads of ebay sales saying they had kodi, then googled kodi, but seemed really unclear what it was...an app to watch loads of free tv, is that it?

Fundamentally yes, in my experience of using it. It works via your broadband.

You can get sackloads of old tv series such as Phoenix Nights, which I like via UKTurks site, then sackloads of films and live sports matches (football, rugby etc) which will be showing at that time on Sky sports, BT Sports, Fox Sports etc etc etc.

Sometimes the quality can be hit and miss, sometimes (rarely) the game you want you just cannot get.

However, it's enough for me to cancel sky sports and films.

Kodi is a great piece of software for internet streaming of film, TV shows, and Live TV including sport. The films, TV are new and old. You need a reasonably fast broadband download speed to avoid buffering (I would suggest min 4mb per second)

Kodi can be easily sideloaded on to a Fire stick.

I would suggest not getting the ones off ebay as they are usually badly set up. Just set up the stick yourself keeping it simple following advice from the official Kodi site http://forum.kodi.tv/ and see post #6

Seems if you have an android device, you can install Kodi on that and cast it to tv through Chromecast.
Anyone know how reliable this is?
