Why has the foreign Office not declared Paris unsafe

Because it's no less safe than, say, London?

My mum and her OH split their time between Paris and a small town in the south of France - they weren't in Paris the last few weeks but haven't changed their plans and have travelled there today.

Because tourist were the direct targets in Tunisia, not the case at all with Paris.

Personally I would go ahead with any planned travel

Terrorists were deliberately targeting tourists. Tourists were a very visible minority congregated together in easy to target groups. There had been more than one attack there and intelligence had reported it was a high risk area. Therefore the individual risk to tourists was considered high enough to issue that advice.

Just because many would still travel to Paris doesn't make it wrong if someone else feels differently. I think this is particularly true when you are responsible for someone else's safety as you often expose others to less risk than you would face yourself. Plus the practicalities of keeping control of three young children should an incident occur may be in the mother's mind.

I travelled to the US six weeks after 9/11, to Las Vegas.

Many people in the US weren't travelling at the time, so Las Vegas was very quiet during the week.

We stayed at Caesars Palace, and as it was so quiet, we got upgraded to a hotel room beyond our wildest dreams.

Then at the weekend, people drove in from Californina, to take advantage of all the cheap unused rooms, and the town was jumping.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, we did consider cancelling, but decided to go ahead. I'm so glad we did, because it was the most amazing holiday.

So, all I can say is, if you cancel you might be giving up a very special holiday. But ultimately, it's the individual's choice, but if you do cancel, it's your decision alone, and you should take the financial hit, no one else, so don't think to try and claim back more than is offered as standard. It's not the airlines fault you have made the decision not to go.

There's a good chance the daughter didn't really want to go anyway and recent events have given her an easy way out.
A good chance she didn't want to go?

Where on earth did you dig that out from the OP's posts? smiley-confused005.gif

I would say that if somebody has a holiday booked there's a more than good chance that they want to go.
  • We were due to go to Disneyland last Sunday and travelled up to London on Saturday, stayed overnight at the Heathrow Travelodge to catch the plane early Sunday morning. Even though we were all a bit concerned we all decided as a party of 6 we wouldn't let them stop us going. However, late Saturday night Disneyland, quite understandably, said they wouldn't reopen until Wednesday which was the day we were due to fly home so we cancelled.

I booked ages ago to depart tomorrow (20th). I was going with 3 friends. One is in hospital, the other has a stinking cold and is in bed. According to the website, I could cancel up to 18th. When I tried yesterday the site states I'm going to be charged 172 euros. When I've queried this with the hotel they tell me it should have been done before midday and not late afternoon. Surely if the time wasn't mentioned and just the date I feel it's unfair to be charged. Am I being unreasonable? Sadly I didn't take out insurance as it was simply a one night stay. Anyone know if i can contest this as the hotel has my card details?
    many thanks for any help/advice

You're entitled to your opinion about what you would do, but poor advice to tell people not to try and get refunds. Numerous travel providers, both air and accommodation, have shown flexibility to customers over this period because they understand natural human reaction, and so there is no reason not to ask. Such policies would not be in place otherwise.

It is that easy. Go and enjoy and tell your daughter to grow up.

How old are your children? Do you tell the this daily?
