Cancelling trip to Paris

My family have booked a trip to Paris at the end of December for the new year, but in the light of recent events, my daughter understandably does not want to take her three small children, and I'm not crazy about the idea myself. The problem is from a total flight cost of £1600 the airline will only refund £297 because of airport taxes etc. Does anyone know of any way of getting more back? I accept there will be some admin charges of some sort but I think £1300 is a bit much!

Getting back just some of the taxes on your tickets is about right as I assume you have chaper non-refundable, non-changeable tickets.

Disinclination to travel is also not something that travel insurance will pay out on.

December for the New Year break is a long way off. Perhaps your daughter will have a change of heart by then and decided to travel.

The only other option might be to call the airline and see if they will move to another date later in 2016 although they would not be obligated to do so.

Review your T&Cs very carefully but I think Westin is absolutely correct, a sudden change of heart (for whatever reason) is unlikely to constitute valid grounds for claiming under your policy.

I appreciate paranoia apropos terrorism is a very personal thing but, unless you live in rural England or a remote part of Scotland, I wouldn't feel any more secure here than in Paris. For what it's worth, I'm travelling there early in the New Year.

The airline is offering a non-refundable voucher valid for 12 months so we might go down that route instead. I appreciate your comments, but my daughter says she will just stay in the apartment for the whole time which is not my idea of fun either

Did you consider not going to New York after 9/11, or London after 7/7?

Many people reconsidered their plans after those events, particularly 9/11. It's not a surprising reaction in the immediate aftermath of yesterday's events that some people don't want to travel.

Destinations bounce back, though it also depends where they are. I'd say Paris will be less impacted than Sharm el-Sheikh or Sousse in Tunisia, for example.

End of December is some time away, perhaps wait a bit to see how things settle.

Have you ever gone to anywhere else that terrorists have attacked or threatened to attack?

Maybe Nothern Ireland, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton (IRA)?

    Any Spanish beach (ETA)?

USA (pretty much any terrorist organisation goiing)

What about Bali, Sri Lanka or pretty much anywhere else worth visiting?

Don't cancel your holiday. Go and enjoy visiting Paris which is a wonderful city. At the same time stick two fingers up to the terrorist scum who want to destroy our way of life. Remember that they will only win if we allow them to, by changing the things that we do and the way that we do them.

I actually feel the same way, but my daughter has three small children to think about and it's not that easy - I have to take her into account, the trip was meant to be about them more than anything

For the next few months, Paris will probably be the safest city in Europe in this respect: there are already 1500 military personnel on the streets.
