Samsung screen turns black when calling

Does anyone have a Samsung mobile? Presume they may all have similar calling feature so maybe can confirm weird calling design is feature or fault?

When I select a contact & touch 'call' the screen turns black while it's calling - which prevents me from immediately hanging up as I cannot see the 'end call' picture.

I inadvertently selected son's workplace instead of home but whilst black the phone went through the whole dialling, reaching his answerphone & I was obliged to listen to the whole "leave a message" thing before the screen finally lit up so I could disconnect......I did it twice in a row!

Is that a fault or a function? No amount of tipping, twisting, pressing the home key or power key would bring the screen light on so I could disconnect the call.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

    Sounds like the function to blank the screen when it is at your ear.
    Calibrate the Sensor
    Step-by-step:
    1:Choose Settings;
    2:Choose Display;
    3:Choose Als_ps calibration; (may be worded differently on your phone)
    4: Use a finger or other object to COVER THE SENSOR;
    5: Follow the calibration prompts carefully.
    (In my case, I simply had to click "Calibrate" followed by "OK".

    Clean the Sensor
    "Just pucker your lips and blow the dust off the top edge of the screen. That's it."
    "take an old toothbrush and clean out the earpiece"
    Spray a burst of compressed air into the orifices of your phone.
    Simply wipe away smudges on the outside of the sensor and front-facing camera lens

    Uncover the Sensor
    Make sure that the sensor isn't obstructed. Did you remove the packing film? If you are using a cover, does it obscure the sensor at all? If so, remove the cover, cut out the appropriate corner, and replace.

    Thank you so much Custardly, you've solved it! I bought a flip down cover which has the flap over clasp at the top........it was indeed flopping down over what I now know is the sensor.

    Might switch to book style!!!
