My war on waste!!!

That was a bit harsh, most people would still have been getting in from work and getting their oldstyle meal on, changing into their second best clothes and putting the kids to bed!
Surely a week after the event is leaving it late to berate the OP?
Still I guess it keeps the post count up0 -
Great thread. Have just caught up reading through the posts. Some good ideas have been made which is great.
We have our own hens and ducks and our neighbours drop off potato peelings and all sorts of veg bits for them. We grow our own veg so this time of year we don't have to buy supermarket veg so hardly any packaging brought home. when we have eggs for a meal I always baked the egg shells in the oven to dry them out. Then I crush them and roll them with a rolling pin to crush them even further. This is then put in their feed bin and mixed in for extra Calcium for them. I collect veg seeds from the veg we grow, I dry them out and use them the following year.
We have 3 bins in our kitchen. The large one for recycling, the medium one for waste and the small one for composting, Our waste bin is only about 18 inches in height and is half full or less every week. I am so careful what I put in it. I have actually stopped myself putting something in there by thinking at the time what I could do with it instead of throwing it away.
We light our stoves with the cardboard tubes from loo rolls and kitchen rolls. And the neighbours drop of their newspapers for us to start our starts off. We have never purchased any Firelighters as newspapers and the cardboard tubes are free.
I made 2 bags from a old baggy jumper once. I actually kept the neck label in one of them just to show that it was actually once a womans jumper, it also has the front of the crew neck shape to it. I made the shoulder straps out of each arm. I decorated it with odd buttons and some broken hair accessories. I thought both of them looked really funky and fun.
We make most of our meals especially soup and freeze them. The containers we use are small ice cream tubs and are donated to us by one of our neighbours.
We make our own jam and chutney and give those as presents all labelled nicely with little recycled fabric hats on normally from my hubbies old shirts. Our jam jars are given to us by our neighbours.
We needed an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for our house recently. We got a huge shock and were incredibly proud to have got 101 points for Environmental Impact for CO2 emissions. They said that our house had the potential of 103 max.
I have really enjoyed reading this thread. Thanks everyone.

Wow you are doing so well :T. I don't seem to be able to grow veg , last year we had the grand total of 2 tomatoes and 1 courgette
I try hard to reduce waste , it's getting the family on board that I find difficult , I'm constantly nagging and acting like the bin police , pulling recyclable stuff out of the general waste . That said the amount of waste we are putting out is over half what if was so a definite improvement .:T0 -

Please stay with this thread and next year I will help you with your tomatoes. We need to know where you are going wrong.
Maybe you could start afresh next year by growing 3 tomato plants in pots and giving them names. I did that in my very first year. I called them Tom, !!!! and Harry. Giving them names makes you more attached to them and makes you care for them :rotfl:. Seriously please have another try next year and I will certainly help you along with it. You will succeed and before you know it you will have that many tomatoes you will be making your own Tomato Ketchup. We have a great recipe for that and have just made our own. We had egg and chips for our supper last night. Eggs from our hens, homemade chips from 2 large potatoes 40p, homemade bread 40p and a big squirt of homemade ketchup. Total cost for supper for 2 of us was 80p. It was cooked on our stove too so no gas or electric used to cook it or bake the bread. We love living frugally.

When I was a kid we used to take a dish to the chippy for 'puddings in gravy' (I lived in Lancashire.). You'd get your steak puddings and gravy in your own dish and they would wrap it in paper.
I also used to pick up dropped handkerchiefs which my Grandma would wash. And then add to the hanky 'tin' once cleaned and ironed.
I *might* still pick them up and wash them myself
And my two big, blue m/f cloths were both found, brought home, washed and are being used. (Keep an eye on car parks, in winter;))
I use old towels, torn down, as cleaning cloths for dirty jobs - and then wash them for re-use.
And I bring fruit waste home from work to go in my compost bin!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

mum always used to say that people took bowls to the chippy when she was a lass - only 'strangers' got their chips wrapped in newspaper.
that practice had died out when I was a kid (1950s), but, I can remember chips being put straight in the newspapers! it was only in the 1960s they were put on sheets of clean white paper (probably butchers paper) before being wrapped in yesterdays tabloids. I can also remember taking big bundles of papers to the local chippy and being given a bag of 'scrumps' as payment. (Scrumps were the 'bits' of batter left behind after they cooked the fish - and sometimes you got lucky and got bits of fish in them!).0 -
