yes they are, the info on the Aptimil webstite and on the side of the bottle states they are. How would we refrigerate them at an airport? I can't see a food establishment agreeing to do this for us?

They aren't heated enough to be actually sterile. What do you think people who have medications that have to be chilled do? All airports have facilities to store vital items in the correct conditions, all you need to do is ask, although its easier if you arrange if before hand. You can then either take a cool bag on the plane to store the bottles until they are taken, or you will be given them in a bag of ice.

I'm still curious as to which airline is unable to provide boiling water, seems unusual.

So Aptimil website and literature on the bottles is effectively lying to parents all over the world??

As mentioned above I have asked - getting absolutely zero response.

I didn't say an airline can't provide boiling water?

Does anyone who has recently travelled through Dubai with a baby and taken formula ie : https://www.aptaclub.co.uk/article/aptamil-first-milk have any advice?

Anyway... off to bed, hoping maybe Dubai Airport themselves might answer tomorrow.

You said in post three you can't boil water, thats poor customer service and I would personally be warning people. I have always found the airports customer to service to be very good when I have called, hopefully tomorrow someone better will answer.

We used to take the one litre bottles as it was enough for most flights to Malaysia, just put it in a fridge on the plane, our stop overs were short so on some it was in an airport fridge and othertimes we just had it in a cool bag with some ice. Can you no longer get the 100ml bottles of formula with the teat attached?

Sterile is no living organisms, formula contains pro-biotics.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Personally, I'd post on trip advisor forum, mumsnet and email/ring Aptimil today.

Bombard people and you may get a response somewhere.

  • As someone who takes long haul flights through the region, usually people have formula in a bottle and on the aircraft they are able to make the bottle up for you, air hostess' are more than use to it.

Also, in Dubai airport there are tons and tons of coffee shops, my solution to you would be do up bottles with the amount of formula and then just get some boiling water from a cafe..

Talk to your travel arranger - it won't be the first time they have had to deal with this problem.

you need to boil 1 litre of water for each bottle so unfortunately can't do that
Why would you want to boil bottled water?

You'll be fine. Though I would have a back up supply of powder (caus I'm like that) though I think I'd just take powder, sterilised (empty) bottles and make them up as needed anyway.

I've seen many people doing this, most having already measured the powder up into individual portions. Planes can supply you with boiled water which you could cool down with bottled water if you're dealing with a screaming baby. (If you're really keen on following 'rules' re: everything being boiled, get/buy some boiled water from a coffee shop or restaurant once past security in your departing airport, to become this 'cool water' on the plane. So say you want a 150ml bottle, ask for 100ml boiling water from cabin crew, mix in powder and add the last 50ml of your cool, room temp water.)

My sister has taken the small individual sized cartons on planes (200ml?) with no problem: security makes exceptions for baby milk.

I would have thought the pre made cartons would be fine - exceptions are normally made for baby milk. Doesn't the airline website have guidance?

Bottled water isn't clean (sterile) enough to make up baby formula. It's not recommended anyway, as it can contain high levels of sodium, especially after boiling, which concentrates all of the minerals in it.

It's a big problem in Third World countries, women may not have access to clean, running water so they will use bottled water. That's why people campaign against large companies promoting formula in areas where it is not safe to do so. Many African women who live here also think that they should use bottled water to make up formula, for some reason they think that it is cleaner than tap water. (Which it isn't)
