What, no chestnuts?

Someone asked this question on another forum a couple of weeks ago. But now we are halfway through November and still none of the local supermarkets seem to have chestnuts in stock.

Has there been a crop failure, does anyone know?

As above I have seen them on sale.

Quite a lot of chestnuts will have been frozen down in advance as well to build stock up for Christmas.

That's curious. Branches of Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi and even Waitrose haven't had them when I've looked in the past fortnight and I can't be alone as another MSE-er has asked the same question elsewhere.

Still, it wouldn't be the first time supermarkets have listed products online that branches haven't actually had in stock.

I have seen them in Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose and had them delivered by Asda.

Maybe it's a regional thing, though I can't think why. Even a large independent local supermarket, which has an excellent range of fresh fruit and vegetables, hasn't had them. I'll just have to keep on trying...

OP have you tried street markets (greengrocers)? The only other reason I can think stores near you may not have them is because some stores were apparently trying to push back the Xmas stock (apparently!) as it gets people's backs up, it could be they start to appear in the next few weeks owing to it now being the 6 week wait 'til the 25th now.

If that is the reason then I applaud it. One of our local stores started Christmas back in early September. If I'd spotted the store manager I'd cheerfully have throttled him - I was still waiting for summer to start!
