IMO, it's a bit like someone booking a two day cruise that then gets cancelled and someone tells them "never mind, there are plenty of beach or skiing holidays available instead.
Maybe things happen in life which are out of our control and that we shouldn't rely on £750 2-night holidays to define whether we are happy or, in terms of staying in and watching TV as an alternative (there are many more possibilities), "miserable".
Maybe OP should have planned for the possibility, given they were trying to book one of the last rooms (risk involved), that the £750 2-night break won't be possible.
Or maybe OP was just saying "so looks like it will be a miserable New Year watching TV rather than a Black tie Ball." to be dramatic and try to gain sympathy (I'd be more sympathetic if one of the people going had a terminal illness, or were unlikely to be alive in 2 years - the hotel might have been too in fairness)0 -
The best thing you can do is to put a complaint to the hotel - not sure what you are after or about to be honest. Plenty of people face similar things. They could easily keep you uninformed and get your money only to give you oh sorry at the last minute.ally.0

You should ask for a discount on a booking at a later date or some kind of complimentary upgrade.0

Just because its an automated system doesn't make it any less binding... need to read the terms to see when a contract becomes binding... but it does sound like it has.
So yes they are breaching it (unless they have terms supporting their behaviour?) so you could find a like for like break and potentially have a case for compensation for the difference in price.
Realistically though just leave a bad review and move on0 -
This is in effect an "overbooking" situation. In such cases the hotel would be responsible for any difference in price for a hotel of a similar standard plus the cost of travelling to the new hotel.
I would look for somewhere else and then seek compensation if more expensive0 -
