Choosing direct debit date

  • Another company that refuse to change direct debit dates are Orange Broadband. I set up an orange broadband account by simply phoning them up giving them bank details and they did the rest. I had no control over the start date that it would be active or anything. My bill cycle occurs on the 7th of every month, the direct debit is due to go out on the 24th of every month. I have requested they change it to the 25th and their response is 'The direct debit payments are set up automatically, you have no choice when we call for it, noone has access to change this.' What has annoyed me is the lack of communication between departments. I have cancelled the direct debit payment but now, because the payment is a day later than they want it, I am being charged a penalty of £5 a time PLUS £1 surcharge for having to pay for it by card. I have begged and pleaded but they refuse to acknowledge that there is a way to change the direct debit from going out a day later. Is there any legislation regarding this at all ie before you set up a DD they give you a choice of dates?

I have recently moved out of home and my finances are still all over the place, I get paid on the 25th of each month, so I can be sure the money is in my account.
