Planes grounded in Sharm so I couldn't get to work? Do I lose a week's pay?

Hi,

My other half and I should have left Sharm el Sheikh 07/11/15, Turns out we can't leave before 14/11/15.

Are there any statutory regulation around loss of earnings? I am scared my company will say "take it as leave / unpaid time off).

I am not concerned about the airline fee / hotel bill, I just can't afford to lose a week's salary and all my holiday time is committed. If I could have worked this week, and would rather be.

Thanks!

You will need to check the wording of your travel insurance policy.
Even if the airline was responsible for the delay, they would not be liable for consequential losses
Under EU261 duty of care, the airline is liable for your accommodation and meals costs until they get you back.
Different companies will treat this differently..during the ash cloud, the company I work for did deduct leave from those affected (and if insufficient paid leave was available, it was unpaid)

Travel insurance confirmed they won't cover loss of earnings.

Will have to explain to work I would have worked if I could...

And work will likely explain: if you don't work, you don't get paid.

There is no statutory right to be paid for time off work caused by travel delays (regardless of the cause or length of the delay). If you are very lucky and you have a generous employer, they may do something for you but there is no obligation on them to do so.
  • As the others have said really. Where I work hr have told managers to allow 3days paid special leave with any additional to that to be taken as unpaid or annual leave.
