correcting credit file errors

Options
Hi All

Can someone advise me on the best way to correct the details on my credit record? the details held by Equifax in relation to a lloyds TSB account - a credit card - are not correct.

Its slightly complicated in that I wrote to Lloyds this summer and requested they remove a minor default (£136) which they very kindly did and replaced it with 4 late payment instead, slightly less awful.

however, in the last month, I have noticed that the dates have gone awry. the default/ now late payment occurred in May 2011 but the information supplied to Equifax has it dated May 2013, which is totally incorrect.

i unfortunately in my naivety did not keep any documents to prove this. so my question is - how do I get them to correct it without proof? i also do not want to undo the default to late payment switch, although they never sent me written confirmation. annoying.

how do I go about this? its so depressing I have been saving really hard and now have a deposit and was hoping for a mortgage...

    You have 2 choices.
    1. You can forget about it and keep saving to build up your mortgage pot because late payments albeit 2 years ago (or possibly 3 years if you wait another 6 months and then apply) are not going to have as much impact on your credit history than a default would have.
    2. Write to Lloyds and ask them to amend the dates from 2013 to 2011, however without any paperwork or proof to show otherwise, it might be a pointless writing exercise as you run the risk of them potentially messing up even further with the more people who look at it, perhaps they will re-add the default now dated 2013, perhaps they will add on late payments for 2011 as well as keeping the 2013 ones, perhaps they will change their minds again and add the default back dated 2011, or perhaps they will comply and re-date the late payments to 2011 – nobody knows.

  • thanks for the response. its just ridiculous that they have effectively put me two years back in sorting out my credit rating. Call credit has the correct information.

I think they have had a system glitch, since it says the account was only closed in July this year. I think I am going to take a deep breath and call the person who was dealing with my complaint letter in the summer and demand they sort it out.

I am happy to hold my hands up to late payments I did make but not those I havent! the only reason I got into trouble was because Lloyds incorrectly changed my address when I moved house (they left the old post code) and I didnt receive any mail for 6 months despite calling them. sigh.

Raise a dispute with Equifax and send a letter to Lloyds
