I live in the middle of the Welsh borders. The nearest roundabout is five miles away, and if there was a parked car, you'd HAVE to go the other way, because it'd be filling the lane...

If it was the other "night", and there's no road lighting, then it's far easier - because you'd see the lights of the other car.

I don't assume every car will have its lights on. I've come across some who don't.

Anyway, I simply made a comment. Why do so many threads on this forum descend into arguing for the sake of it?

I must admit to being a bit of a "wimp" when turning right across traffic if I can't see clearly, so have been known to turn left instead then finding a roundabout or somewhere where I have clear visibility in which to turn in order to proceed in the direction I really wanted to go. :-)

That's not wimpish, it is considerate and safe. I wish more people would act like this.

Unless you're driving something with a bonnet a mile long, just inch forward until you CAN see. Don't be afraid to take whatever other aids there are to increasing your line of sight - look through parked cars, look down the inside of them, or use reflections in shop windows.

Agreed, and that is what most people will do in real-world situations. But if you absolutely CANNOT see it is safe, it is far better to put yourself to a slight inconvenience by changing your route and finding a safe place to turn, than to risk an accident, as the OP has found.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

So that's why you're always late for appointments! :D
