Car accident - Insurance issue. Please advise?

  • The police should be able to find the correct registration number. You know it's an A4 you know the colour, it's not hard work for them.

The road traffic act has not been complied with so report it as a non stop.
The problem with this is that you they have the first 4 digits but missing the last 3 the chances are there are a lot of Audi A4s registered at the same place at the same period eg Sept '04 to April '05 so all you are likely to get is a list of 20+ A4s and if any are the same colour it doesn't help. Also data protection prevents the police just handing out all the details for you to run down.

But they stopped. The OP's OH wrote the reg number down wrong. A potentially costly mistake.

The third party never provided their address details, which is a requirement.

You may be told you "don't need it" if somebody finds that expedient but the road traffic act was written long before everything was available on line & therefore requires that if you demand it they provide you with the name of their insurer.

I'd therefore suggest that you write to the police with a complaint & expectation that they investigate this breach of the law.

Were there any cameras on your route that may have picked up the vehicle reg? Any witnesses you / police could appeal for ? Would she recognise the driver again? How badly was the other car damaged - is it likely it will have turned up in a local body shop for repair? How badly is your car damaged - is it worth claiming on your own insurance if necessary & fully comp?

Thanks for the help guys! I will be back onto the police in the morning if I hear nothing.

My partner didn't have any pen and paper on her at the time and instead of taking a picture of the reg, she typed it in on a note on her phone. she now thinks the last three letters may of been changed through spell check. so I'm trying to work out the different combinations as to what could of changed to the three we have. wish me luck!![/QUOTE]

So 26 to the power of 3...that's 17,576 possible combinations; good luck with that one.

24 to the power of 3. A maximum of 13,824.

These thousands of combinations only apply if you haven't a clue what the last 3 letters are, and have all the letters of the alphabet as possibles.

The OP has the three letters just they may be in the wrong order - so the possible combinations are much fewer.

    Not difficult at all.

Then you try the possibilities into the Eurocarpart website for example and see how many A4s you get.

    Good luck.

PM me if you need help.

The way I read it was she typed in the correct letters but predictive text/spellcheck changed it. No guarantee its the same three letters.

    Perhaps so.

Either way the other driver was out of order not giving full details - obviously got something to hide.
  • I think searching the UK for a certain coloured Audi A4 will be a massive task!!

The lesson to be learnt here is to take plenty of photographs if you're ever involved in an accident.

    Who mentioned searching the UK?

Yes, 20 plus but how many will be local keepers?

Complaint about what and why write? The road traffic act maybe out dated and not to your liking but it ta the law and its states you must report in person.
